I. \\#Acts 21:31-22:23\\ Paul on the steps
    A. \\#1-2\\ Paul’s Address
    B. \\#3-6\\ Paul’s Introduction
        1. \\#3\\ A Jew
        2. Born in Tarsus
        3. Brought up in Jerusalem at the feet of Gamaliel - Paul
would have certainly seen Jesus in person probably many
            times.
        4. "zealous" - Full of zeal to defend the law and the temple.
        5. "as ye are this day" - Paul could hardly be angry at the
people for he had done what they were doing for years.
        6. \\#4\\ "And I persecuted this way unto the death"
            a. "this way" was a reference to the Christians.
            b. This statement is the closest we have from the
Scriptures that Paul was responsible not only for the
beating and arrests of Christians but for their
                deaths.
        7. \\#5\\ Many could bear witness to it, including "the high
priest and all the estate of the elders…."
    C. \\#5-21\\ Paul’s Testimony (Acts 9)
        1. \\#5\\ "from whom I received letters …to Damascus" - It
was while Paul was in that cause working for those people
that he traveled to Damascus to arrest the Christians.
        2. \\#6\\ "noon" - This is an added detail not given in Acts
            9.
        3. \\#9\\ "saw indeed the light …heard not the voice" -
Probably did not understand the voice for \\#Acts 9:7\\
            says "hearing a voice."
        4. \\#11\\ Blinded by "the glory of that light."
        5. \\#15\\ "For thou shalt be his witness unto all men" here
as opposed to \\#Acts 9:15\\ "to bear my name before
Gentiles, and kings, and the children of Israel."
        6. \\#16\\ "wash away thy sins, calling on the name of the
Lord" - Church of Christ say baptism washes away sins.
Baptism is a picture of the cleansing that salvation
            brings.
        7. \\#17-21\\ Describes a vision that Paul had when he was in
Jerusalem during the early days of his salvation.
        8. \\#18\\ We find out that Paul was told of the plot to kill
him by God directly; whereas, \\#Acts 9:24\\ merely says,
"But their laying await was known of Saul."
    D. \\#22-23\\ The Crowd’s Response
        1. Paul did not finish revealing the details of his vision
            for he was interrupted.
        2. \\#22\\ "they gave him audience unto this word" - Once the
word "Gentiles" was mentioned, the Jews rioted again. As
we noticed on Paul’s earlier journeys, the Jews did not
reject the gospel for doctrinal reasons, but for their
jealousy and bigotry against the Gentiles. Had they been
able to share their Messiah with the Gentiles, the world
would be a different place today.
        3. \\#22-23\\ Their reaction was both vocal and violent:
            a. "it is not fit that he should live"
            b. "cast off their clothes, and threw dust into the air"

II. \\#Acts 22:24-30\\ Paul to be examined (in the castle)
    A. \\#Acts 22:24-29\\ By the Whip
        1. \\#24\\ "examined by scourging" - The captain seeing that
Paul’s speech was not going well, took Paul inside. He
was going to use the scourge to get to the truth.
        2. \\#25\\ "Is it lawful for you to scourge a man that is a
Roman, and uncondensed?" The laws provided the highest
            protection to Roman citizens.
        3. \\#28\\ "But I was born free" - And the highest of the
Roman citizens were those born as citizens.
        4. \\#29\\ "the chief captain also was afraid …because he
had bound him" - Apparently even to bind a Roman citizen
            was dangerous.
    B. \\#Acts 22:30-23:11\\ By the Council
        1. "On the morrow" - The next day…
        2. "known the certainty" - Because he wanted to know for sure.
        3. "commanded the chief priests and all their council" - The
captain assembled the High Priest and council.
