I. \\#Acts 27:1-28:16\\ Paul’s Journey to Rome
    A. \\#Acts 27:1-13\\ The Planned Route
    B. \\#Acts 27:14-28:10\\ Lost at Sea
    C. \\#Acts 28:1-10\\ The island of Melita
        1. \\#1\\ "island was called Melita" - The storm had carried
the ship 600 miles as the crow flies—yet generally in
            the correct direction.
        2. \\#2\\ "present rain, and because of the cold" - We do not
know how much time had passed but it appears the rain
            from the storm continued.
        3. \\#3-4\\ ‘a viper out of the heat, fastened on his hand"
A snake from the firewood bit Paul, causing the people of
the island to suppose god was punishing him.
        4. \\#5-6\\ After Paul was not affected, they began to think
            that Paul was a god!
        5. \\#7\\ "Publius" - The chief of the island cared for "us"
for "three days courteously." The verse does not make it
clear if he cared for Paul and friends or all of the
shipwrecked travelers including the man prisoners.
        6. \\#8\\
            a. "the father of Publius lay sick" - The Greek word is
dysentery, a disease pf the bowels.
            b. "Paul …healed him" - Whom Paul healed.
        7. \\#9\\ "others …came" - Once God’s power was evident,
those sick from around the island came for healing of
the body—and we would suppose, healing of the spirit.
        8. \\#10\\
            a. "Who also honoured us" - The people respected and
cared for Paul and his company as a result.
            b. "they laded us with such things as were necessary"
The natives provided the things needed while Paul was
                on the island.
    D. \\#Acts 28:11-16\\ The Journey Continues Map
        1. \\#11\\
            a. "after three months" - The passengers are stranded for
                the winter.
            b. "departed in a ship of Alexandria" - The island must
have had a port for another ship of Alexandria
\\#Acts 27:6\\ had stayed on the island for winter.
            c. "whose sign was Castor and Pollus" - These are the
"sons" of the Roman god, Jupiter, and their sign was
probably used as a good luck charm.
        2. \\#12\\ "landing at Syracuse" - Their first stop was on
the island of Sicily where they stayed for three days.
        3. \\#13-14\\ Map
            a. "we fetched a compass" - That is, they went in a round-
about manner, not taking the straightest course. They
are probably on a ship that needed to make several
                stops to transport cargo.
            b. "Rhegium" - On the toe of Italy.
            c. "after one day the south wind blew" - The wind from the
south blew, taking them northward to "Puteoli."
                (1) \\#14\\ "Where we found brethren, and were desired
to stay seven days" - As Paul was still a
prisoner and restricted, it would seem that
people must have been far more friendly and
                     out-going in that day.
                (2) Julius, Paul’s captor, also must have given Paul
                     much lead way.
            d. "and so we went toward Rome" - But after the week, they
pressed on toward Rome. Since there is no mention of
another ship, it appears that the journey continued on
                foot.
        4. \\#15\\ Map
            a. "from thence …the brethren heard" - Word in the
Christian community went ahead of Paul.
            b. "they came to meet us" - And some came from Rome to
meet Paul at "Appii forum and The three taverns"
                Probably a place to lodge.
            c. "took courage" - This encouraged Paul greatly.
        5. \\#16\\ "And when we came to Rome" - After many months, the
            journey is completed.
            a. "the centurion delivered the prisoners to the captain
of the guard" - Julius surrenders his prisoners.
            b. "but Paul was suffered to dwell by himself with a
solider" - Paul continued to be treated with
privilege, perhaps in part to Julius’ report.

II. \#Acts 28:17-31\\ Paul in Rome
    A. \\#17-29\\ Paul Before the Jews
        1. \\#17\\ - "after three days"
        2. Paul called the chief of the Jews" - Paul wanted to give
his account of his arrest and appeal to Caesar to the Jews
            in Rome.
        3. \\#17-20\\ Paul’s Explanation
            a. \\#17\\ "I have committed nothing" - So Paul
                summarized why he was arrested.
            b. \\#19-20\\ And why he was forced to appeal to Caesar.
        4. \\#21-22\\ The Jews Response
            a. \\#21\\ "We neither received letters out of Judaea"
These Jews had not been informed by the Jews of Judea,
either by letter or in person.
            b. \\#22\\ "we desire to hear" - But they wanted to hear
                about Jesus.
                (1) "this sect" - A "section" or group or portion of
                     the Jews.
                (2) "every where it is spoken against" - They had
heard of Christianity, mostly in a negative
sense, but they were willing to hear a more
                     thorough presentation.
        5. \\#23-28\\ Paul Shares Christ
            a. \\#23\\ Paul preached.
            b. \\#24\\ As in most locations, "some believed …some
                believed not."
            c. \\#25-27\\ Paul quotes \\#Is 6:9-10\\ and applied it to
                the Jews of that day.
                (1) They had heard but did not understand.
                (2) They had seen but did not perceive.
                (3) Their heart was heavenly, their ears dull, their
                     eyes closed.
                (4) In short, the blindness of \\#Romans 11:7, 25\\
                     had come upon the nation.
            d. \\#28\\ Yet, the gospel would be preached to the
Gentiles and Paul knew they would believe it.
        6. \\#29\\ "the Jews departed" - And with that, the counsel
            was ended.
    B. \\#30-31\\ Paul’s Last Recorded Fate
        1. \\#30\\ "And Paul dwelted two whole years" - For the next
two years, Paul rented a home and was allowed to receive
            guests.
        2. \\#31\\ "Preaching the kingdom of God" - And he had some
liberty to preach without any interference from the law,
although this was probably only within the range of his
            home.

And with that, Luke stopped writing. No doubt, the letter was sent
to Theophilus \\#Acts 1:1\\ at that time. Some believe Paul was
eventually set free for a time but was rearrested. Some believe he
was never released. In either case, history tells us that Paul was
beheaded at Rome. The date of his death is generally given in 64 AD,
31 years after Jesus’ death and resurrection.

Some of Paul’s letters were written from Rome:
61 to 63 AD - Ephesians, Philippians, Colossians, Philemon.
63 - 1Timothy, Titus - He wrote these two books in Nicopolis, right
after he was released from a prison in Rome.
67 - 2Timothy - In Rome, while he was a prisoner for the last time.
