I. \\#Acts 4:32-5:42\\ The Power of Chastening
A.\\#Acts 4:32-37\\ Continuous Demonstrations of the Holy Ghost
    B. \\#Acts 5:1-11\\ The Holy Ghost Chastens
        1. \\#1-2\\ "Ananias, with Sapphira his wife" - It was in
that spirit of giving that Ananias and Sapphira to
disobey the Holy Ghost and attempt to deceive the church.
            a. There is no reason to believe these two were not
Christians. The evidence points to the opposite
as being true. God dealt with them as children
                \\#Heb 12:8\\.
            b. The sins that the couple committed were at least
                two fold.
                (1) They were disobeying the Holy Ghost. For
some reason, this one gets overlooked.
The believers who gave were doing do so
because God lead them to do so. Ananias
and Sapphira either lacked the faith to
give all or the generosity to give all.
They pretended to obey but did not. Peter
called this "lying to God" \\#Acts 5:4\\
and "tempting the Spirit of the lord"
                     \\#Acts 5:9\\.
                 (2) At the same time, they attempted to deceive
the church into making them believe that
they given all of the price for the
property to the church \\#Acts 5:8\\.
        2. \\#3-10\\ For this, the Holy Ghost chastens the couple.
            a. \\#3-4\\ Notice that it was not Peter’s call on
what happened to Ananias. The Holy Ghost told
Peter what Ananias had done and Peter revealed
that knowledge, but Peter did not curse Ananias.
The Holy Ghost did to Ananias was He deemed fit.
            b. \\#8-9\\ Once Sapphira came and repeated her
husband’s lie, was apparent to Peter that the
same penalty would be executed on her, but I do
not think that was Peter’s doings. All of this
was God working to teach the new church that He
saw the heart and knew the secrets of men. God
would not allow the church to become the disobedient
and deceitful entity that Israel had become.
        3. \\#11\\ The results was that "great fear came…."
            a. First, "upon all the church" for Ananias and Sapphira
were believers who had sinned against the Holy Ghost
                and the church.
            b. But also "on all them that heard these things" for
even those who were not believers should know the
                power of God.
    C. \\#Acts 5:12-42\\ Continuous Demonstration of the Holy Ghost-
        (healing, salvation)
        1. \\#12-13, 15-16\\ Healing
            a. Some things had changed from the healing ministry of
                Jesus to the apostles.
                (1) \\#12\\ There were eleven apostles verses one
                     Jesus.
                (2) The apostles were not attempting to hide
themselves or their miracles. We are never told
the reason why Jesus told some to keep their
healing a secret or why He took some outside of
the city to be healed, but the apparent reason
is that the more people who knew of the miracles
the quicker the religious leaders would move
against the miracle workers—as they do in
                     \\#Acts 5:17\\.
            b. \\#13\\ "Solomon’s porch …no man join himself to
                them"
                (1) Solomon's Porch
                     (a) Image 1
                     (b) Image 2
                (2) The apostles no longer met in secret to discuss
what God was doing with them but in the open at
                     Solomon’s Porch in the temple.
                     (a) Solomon’s Porch was a portion of the covered
colonnade rebuilt or renovated around the
                          temple perimeter by Herod.
                     (b) The portion designated Solomon’s Porch was
along the east wall and included portions
                          left from Solomon’s temple.
                     (c) During Solomon’s day, the area was used for
judgment. During Jesus’ day, it was used
                          for public teaching.

                (2) While the apostles healed publically and openly,
they still needed private time to discuss and
understand what God was leading them to do and
to become. During those times, the people
sensed their need to be alone.
            c. \\#15-16\\ Mass healings
                (1) \\#15\\ "the shadow of Peter passing by" - Great
multitudes came to be healed. Perhaps so many
that Peter and the apostles could not
individually tend to them so the people sat
along the roads and walkways that his shadow
                     might pass over them.
                (2) "shadow of Peter" - Peter became the prominent
apostle probably because he was perceived as
                     being the main speaker.
                (3) \\#16\\ "they were healed every one" - All who
came to the apostles were healed.
        2. \\#14\\ Salvation - The Holy Spirit continued to save many
            souls.
        3. \\#17-42\\ Suffer/Persecution
            a. \\#17-25\\ God demonstrated that His people could not
be persecuted unless He allowed it. This must mean
that God is not as interested in our escaping
persecution as He is in our bringing Him glory
                through it.
            b. \\#26-40\\
                (1) \\#26\\ "brought them" - This is the second time
the apostles were brought before the Jewish
leaders. I find it interesting that the Jewish
leaders could never bring Jesus in. Except
for on the Mount of Olives, Jesus always eluded
                     them \\#Luke 4:30, John 7:46, 8:59, 10:39\\.
                (2) "lest they should have been stoned" - The people
                     wanted the miracles to continue.
                (3) \\#28, 30\\ "intend to bring this man’s blood
upon us" - As Peter had spoken boldly to the
public who crucified Jesus, so he spoke to the
rulers who had sought for it and carried it out.
                (4) \\#29\\ "We ought to obey God rather than men" -
Peter is more direct than he was in
\\#Acts 4:19-20\\, but the message was the same.
The Apostles were going to obey God even if it
meant they continued to disobey man.
                (5) \\#33\\ "they …were cut to the heart …slay
them" - Although this was only the second time
the apostles had been brought before the
religious leaders, they had decided what to do
                     with them.
                (6) \\#34-39\\ "Gamaliel" - This was Paul’s personal
teacher \\#Acts 22:3\\. Gamaliel was obviously
an esteemed and respected leader among the
                     Pharisees.
                     (a) He mentions some who false prophets who had
                          risen up in Israel.
                           i. \\#36\\ Theudas
ii. \\#37\\ Judas of Galilee in the days of
taxing, perhaps around the time of
Jesus’ birth but not necessarily. Rome
had probably taxed the people on many
                               occasions.
iii. The reason he probably did not mention
Jesus’ name was because these men were
preaching Jesus was still alive and
Jesus’ following had not died out!
                     (b) \\#38-39\\ His reasoning was mostly sound.
                           i. Those efforts started by men will fail.
ii. If it a movement is from God, we do not
want to be found fighting God!
iii. However, a movement can come from
                               Satan—and many have—and endure.
                (7) \\40\\ "and beaten them" - This time, the
                     persecution goes beyond mere threatening.
            c. \\#41-42\\ The Apostles response
                (1) \\#41\\ They "rejoiced that they were counted
worthy (by the Lord) to suffer for his name.:
                (2) \\#42\\ "They ceased not to teach and preach
Jesus Christ." - It is obvious that God’s law
supercedes man’s law. We must settle this in
                     our hearts.
