Notes:
I. \\#Jonah 2:1-9\\ Jonah’s Prayer of Repentance
A. \\#Jon 2:1-9\\ Three Long Days In A Fish
1. The "three days" \\#1:17\\ followed by the word "Then" \\#2:1\\ implies
that, even in the "fish’s belly," it took Jonah three days to repent.
Jonah was a stubborn man.
a. \\#2:1-2\\ "Jonah prayed… thou heardest my voice" - God can be
reached no matter where you are!
b. \\#2:2\\
(1) "affliction" - Jonah was being afflicted. He had chosen to
be in the hands of an angry God. That is never a comfortable
place to be.
(2) "belly of hell" - Jonah considered this hell; that is, the
place of God’s judgment.
c. \\#2:3-6\\ This was a BIG fish which caused some BIG problems.
(1) \\#2:3\\ "the floods compassed me" - Jonah was being covered
with waves.
(2) \\#2:5-6\\ "the weeds were wrapped about my head." Jonah sank
into deep waters
(3) \\#2:6\\ "I went down to the bottoms of the mountains" - Jonah
was being tossed inside the fish.
d. \\#2:4-9\\ However, this dire situation made Jonah aware of his
spiritual need.
(1) \\#2:4\\ "I will look again toward the holy temple" - Jonah
had left Israel, perhaps not thinking that he was leaving the
only place on earth a Jew could properly worship the Lord.
Now, he wanted to see that place again.
(2) \\#2:5\\ Jonah’s afflictions were more than just physical.
They were "even to the soul." Jonah had not considered that
some fates are worse than death \\#Hebrews 10:31\\.
(3) \\#2:6\\ "thou brought up my life from corruption, O Lord my
God." - After repenting, Jonah was grateful that God had
spared his life.
(4) \\#2:7\\ "When my soul fainted…"
(a) "I remembered the Lord" - Jonah repented, but not until
his strength was gone.
(b) "my prayer came in unto thee" - After Jonah repented, the
Lord could again hear his prayers.
(c) Repentance is such a powerful aid in reaching God.
(5) \\#2:8\\ "…observe lying… forsake… mercy" - Jonah was
a man who understood the relationship between sin and
judgment. He knew that sin, such as lying, separates us
from God’s mercy.
(6) \\#2:9\\ "But I will sacrifice unto thee" - Jonah had faith
that the Lord would both forgive and spare him \\#2:4\\.
(a) He had this faith even though he could not offer a proper
sacrifice. This would indicate that the Jews understood
that sacrifices did not secure and keep them saved.
(b) Jonah also understood that the Lord’s chastisement was to
get his attention, not to punish him. One gives hope of
deliverance; one does not.
B. \\#2:10\\ On Dry Land Again
1. "the Lord spake unto the fish" - God controls all of His creation.
2. "…it vomited out Jonah" - And all creation obeys Him.
