We continue our study of Tuesday with Jesus teaching in the temple.
Where we are in the outline:

I. Tuesday \\#Matt 21:23-23:29, Mk 11:27-12:44, Luke 20:1-21:4\\
    A. \\#Matt 21:23-27\\ His Authority
    B. \\#Matt 21:28-32\\ Parable - It is not too late to do the
        right thing.
    C. \\#Matt 21:33-46\\ Parable and Sermon - Judgment will come to
Israel for what they are about to do.
    D. \\#Matt 22:1-14\\ Parable - If the Jews will not come, others
        will.
        1. \\#1-10\\ The parable:
            a. The king is God.
            b. The son is Jesus.
            c. The wedding is an opportunity to be joined to the Son,
                a picture of salvation.
            d. Those that were first bidden were the Jews.
            e. \\#3-6\\ Those who were mistreated and slain were the
                prophets.
            f. \\#7\\ The destruction from the king was the judgment
upon Israel. Jesus was speaking of it as though it
                were fact because it was.
            g. \\#9\\ Those who were brought to the wedding were the
                Gentiles, that is, the church.
        2. \\#11-13\\ The condition of coming.
            a. Even though the Father wants all to be joined to His
                Son, they must come appropriately.
            b. \\#11-12\\ The provided wedding garment is the
righteousness provided by the Son of God when He
                died.

Re 19:8 And to her was granted that she should
be arrayed in fine linen, clean and white: for
the fine linen is the righteousness of saints.

Isa 61:10 I will greatly rejoice in the LORD,
my soul shall be joyful in my God; for he hath
clothed me with the garments of salvation, he
hath covered me with the robe of righteousness,
as a bridegroom decketh himself with ornaments,
and as a bride adorneth herself with her jewels.

            c. Those cast out of the wedding are those who refused to
                come to Jesus.
            d. \\#13\\ The place of weeping and gnashing of teeth is
                hell.
        3. \\#14\\ The sad truth is so many (I would say all) are
invited to be joined with the Son, but so few will
            accept.
            a. "chosen" - This word does indicate that salvation is
                not all man’s doing.
            b. God, in His sovereignty, must work in person’ life to
give him the truth and to make him understand it.
            c. God must also work in a person’s heart until that
                person accepts the Son.
            d. While I believe Christ died for all and that anyone
can be saved, it is seems that some are dealt with
                far more than others.
            e. This is the sovereign choice of God.
    E. \\#Matt 22:15-46\\ The Jews try to trap Jesus.
        1. \\#15\\ "the Pharisees, and took counsel how they might
entangle him" - From this and the following verses, it
is obvious that the different Jewish sects, even though
they did not often agree on many things, colluded
together in an attempt to trap and kill Jesus.
        2. \\#Matt 22:16-22\\ The Herodians ask about taxes.
            a. \\#16\\ "The Herodians" - Were not a religious but a
political sect. Little is known about them except
that from their name, one would suppose they
                supported King Herod.
                (1) How strange would it be for the Herodians and
                     Pharisees to work together?
                (2) \\#18\\ Jesus’ condemnation of the Herodians
in this section of Scripture indicates that they
were working with the religious groups.
            b. At the heart of this question is an issue that needed
to be resolved for all generations to follow, namely,
are Christians to pay taxes which support wicked
                governments?
                (1) Jesus answered by pointing out that our money,
although given and blessed by God, is minted and
                     produced by this world.
                (2) Hence, as much as possible, if we are using the
things that the world provides, we are to obey
the rules that the world makes.
                (3) It would seem that our Lord is teaching us that
to enjoy the benefits offered by an evil world
and then to claim exemption from its rules
because it is corrupt would be hypocritical at
                     best.
            c. \\#22\\ "they marvelled" - Those who came to "match
wits" with Jesus were amazed at His perception and
                wisdom.
        3. \\#Matt 22:23-33\\ The Sadducees ask about the
            resurrection?
            a. \\#23\\ "the Sadducees" - A religious group believed
to have garnered its name from the godly priest,
Zadok. In \\#1Kings 1:32-45\\, Zadok followed
David’s desire to promote Solomon to the throne
instead of following Solomon’s older brother,
Adonijah. The Sadducees took their name to identify
themselves with the zeal and purity of Zadok.
                (1) Generally, it seems that the Sadducees opposed
                     whatever the Pharisees accepted.
                (2) The belief for which they are most often
associated is their rejection of angels and the
                     resurrection.
            b. \\#23-28\\ The question posed by the Sadducees was one
they had no doubt used in debating the resurrection
                with the Pharisees.
                (1) The question was based on the Old Testament
command God gave to provide that a family of
                     Israel would never die out.

Deut 25:5 If brethren dwell together, and one
of them die, and have no child, the wife of
the dead shall not marry without unto a
stranger: her husband’s brother shall go in
unto her, and take her to him to wife, and
perform the duty of an husband’s brother
unto her.

                (2) The Sadducees had taken this command to the
extreme in their attempt to show that God’s own
commandments would produce a chaotic and
confusing afterlife; therefore, there must be no
                     afterlife.
            c. \\#29-32\\ Jesus corrects the Sadducees on two counts.
                (1) \\#30\\ They did not know the power of God. This
religious group had not considered that the fact
that the afterlife and life are drastically
different. In this case, they had not
considered that in heaven there will be no
                     marriage.
                (2) \\#31-32\\ They did not know the Scriptures.
Jesus demonstrates that even the WORDS God uses
are inspired by quoting God’s words and placing
the emphasis not on the thought that was being
conveyed but on the verb tense being used. God
IS the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob— that
is PRESENT TENSE, meaning that those who have
departed this life are still very much alive.
            d. \\#33\\ The amazement for Jesus’ wisdom continued to
                grow.
        4. \\#Matt 22:34-40\\ What is the greatest commandment?
            a. \\#35\\ "a lawyer" - The meaning is not the same as in
our culture. In the Jewish culture, a lawyer is one
who studied the Old Testament law. \\#Mark 12:28\\
called him a scribe. The office of scribe began with
them being primarily a copyist. They were those who
copied the Scriptures. The first scribes were
probably Levites but others were eventually allowed
to join. Again, in time, scribes were well educated
and were considered leaders. By the New Testament,
the scribes were considered to be guardians of the
                law.
            b. \\#36\\ The question asked by the lawyer was which
commandment is the greatest or the most important.
Most probably this was an often debated issue among
                the scribes.
            c. \\#38-39\\ Jesus gave the lawyer a double answer,
telling him not only the most important but also the
                second most important commandment.
                (1) The most important commandment is to love God
with all of your heart, soul, and mind.
                (2) The second is to love your neighbor as you would
                     love yourself.
            d. In both commandments, the key is to love, first and
foremost to love God and then to love others. It
should not be missed that what God desires more
than any other is that we love Him and others.
            e. \\#40\\ Jesus goes on to say that such devotion and
commitment will hold all of the other commandments
and teachings of the Old Testament in their proper
                place.
            f. We should also note that no rebuke is given to the
lawyer. In fact, Mark goes on to tell us that Jesus
considered the man and his question to be earnest.
Perhaps he was part of the ploy to entrap Jesus.
Perhaps he just had a question he wanted answered.

Mark 12:32 And the scribe said unto him, Well,
Master, thou hast said the truth: for there is
one God; and there is none other but he:
33 And to love him with all the heart, and
with all the understanding, and with all the
soul, and with all the strength, and to love
his neighbour as himself, is more than all
whole burnt offerings and sacrifices.
34 And when Jesus saw that he answered
discreetly, he said unto him, Thou art not far
from the kingdom of God. And no man after that
durst ask him any question.

        5. \\#Matt 22:41-46\\ Jesus asks whose son the Messiah is?
            a. After each of the groups asked Jesus their questions,
Jesus asks the Pharisees, who first attempted to
                entrap Jesus, a question.
            b. \\#42\\ Whose son will the Christ be?
                (1) The Old Testament makes many references to the
fact that Messiah will be the Son of David
                     \\#Is 11:1, 10, Jer 23:5, 33:15\\.
                (2) The Pharisees are glad to answer the question
                     and do so correctly.
            c. \\#43-45\\ Jesus then quotes from \\#Psalm 110:1\\
and asks the Pharisees how the Son of David could
also be the Lord over David.
                (1) Two truths need to be considered in the question.
                     (a) The word LORD is the Jewish term for God or
Jehovah. It is not the word used for a
mere earthly master. This is David saying
                          the Messiah would be God.
                     (b) David uses the present tense verb. He was
saying that the Messiah was his God and
Lord even as he wrote the psalm, not that
He would one day be his God and Lord.
                (2) If this was a question the religious leaders of
that day had ever asked, they had no answer for
                     it.
                (3) \\#46\\ Matthew goes on to tell us that the
leaders no would no longer try to battle wits
with our Lord! They had lost and knew He was
                     wiser than they.
            d. But what of the answer to Jesus’ question? How could
the Messiah be both the Son of David and the Lord
God? The answer lies in two facts:
                (1) The incarnation of God - The fact that God
would put on flesh and be born of the seed of
David. The incarnation of God as Jesus was
the very notion and doctrine that these
Pharisees were rejecting as they determined to
kill Jesus. It is a shame that these Jews were
so close to the Truth but would not see it.
                (2) The eternality of Jesus - Jesus, as the incarnate
God, had always been. Jesus was alive and well
in the days of David; hence, David in Psalm 110
was actually speaking TO the eternal Jesus.
