I. \\#11:1-13:31\\ The Obedience to the Covenant
A. \\#11:1-36\\ Resettlement of the People
1. \\#1-3\\ The Plan
a. \\#4\\ "the children of Judah, and the children of
Benjamin" - This chapter seems to details the efforts
of two tribes to repopulate Jerusalem.
b. \\#1\\ "one of ten" were selected to come by lot.
c. \\#2\\ And some "willingly offered themselves"
d. \\#3\\ "but in the cities of Judah dwelt every one in
his possessions" - Perhaps the people who dwelt in
other cities were exempted from living in Jerusalem
as they all had the same problems, protecting their
cities.
e. \\#3\\ "chief of the province" - Israel was no longer
a nation but now a province of Babylon and Persia.
Note: It does not seem probably that these men and their families
would be giving up their inheritance although after so long a time,
it is conceivable that not everyone knew exactly what land was
theirs. I would speculate that in the relocation of some was only
temporary, perhaps until the year of Jubilee—assuming they returnees
kept the law in that regards.
2. \\#4-25\\ The numbers by families of those who moved to
Jerusalem are given along with the names of those who
lead them and some of their responsibilities.
a. \\#16\\ "…had the oversight of the outward business
of the house of God."
b. \\#20\\ "And the residue of Israel… were in all the
cities of Judah" - Emphasis was being made to inform
us that not all of the people were moved.
c. \\#21\\ The Nethinims dwelt in Ophel, a specific part
of the city of Jerusalem.
d. \\#23\\ "…it was the king’s commandment" - The
Persian king, Artaxerxes, gave come commands for the
care of God’s servants.
e. \\#24\\ Pethahiah stayed in Persia to represent the
all of the people to the king.
3. \\#25-35\\ Villages are mentioned which were fortified
in population by the people.
4. \\#36\\ And the Levites located themselves throughout
Benjamin and Judah to teach the people.
