Matthew 6:9-15
We Want It Too

In \\Luke 11:2\\, the disciples ask Jesus to teach them to pray.
They had seen something about Jesus and His praying that they wanted.
What?
    1. They had seen that Jesus got answers to His prayers.
    2. They had seen heaven come down when Jesus prayed.

Seeing that, they wanted to pray like Jesus prayed. So Jesus gave
the disciples a model of prayer. Some call it the Lord’s Prayer, but
it is not a prayer just to be memorized and recited. It is a model
to teach us what we should do when we pray and it is an example to
show us how to worship.

I notice four elements in this model. I will not have time to get to
all four so this morning, let me share the first two.

I. \\#9\\ A connection with God.
    A. We need two things to connect with the God.
        1. Relationship - Father and son
        2. Access - He is in heaven. We are on earth.
    B. The Bible tells us that we are not born with God as our
        Father.
        1. People like to say we are all brothers and sisters and God
is our Father. That is not exactly correct.
        2. We are all brothers and sisters but we have a different
            Father.

Joh 8:44 Ye are of your father the devil, and
the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a
murderer from the beginning, and abode not in
the truth, because there is no truth in him.
When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own:
for he is a liar, and the father of it.

        3. What is our birth relationship to God?

Ro 5:10 For if, when we were enemies, we were
reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much
more, being reconciled, we shall be saved by his
life.

        4. Why are we born enemies with God? We can sum it up in one
            word, SIN.

Isa 59:2 But your iniquities have separated
between you and your God, and your sins have hid
his face from you, that he will not hear.

        5. There could not be two more opposite in nature beings than
a human being and a Holy God.
        6. So how can we have a relationship with God? How can God
            become our Father?

Joh 14:6 Jesus saith unto him, I am the way,
the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto
the Father, but by me.

        7. It was Jesus’ death, burial, and resurrection that paid
the price for our sins and by turning from sin to Jesus
while believing on Jesus Christ, you can have become
            born again!

John 3:7 …Ye must be born again.

            a. The new birth is a new relationship with God as your
Father, Jesus as your Savior, the blood-washed as
                your brothers and sisters.
            b. You can then pray and have God as your Father.
    C. But even with God as your Father, to pray and worship, we must
        maintain our access to God.
        1. Jesus states that the Father is in heaven.
            \\#Matt 7:21, 10:32, 33, 12:50, 16:17, 18:10, 19, 24:36\\
        2. Jesus also said that He was going to His father.
            \\#John 14:2, 12, 28, 16:10, 16\\
        3. We definitely are not in heaven so we need access to pray
            and worship.
        4. Having Jesus as our Savior paved a road to God, but
maintenance is required to keep the road passable.
            a. Sin, like trees blown down in a storm, can block the
                road.
            b. lust, coldness, preoccupation, worldliness, love of
                money
            c. That is why we have church and revival services but in
the end, it is the individual Christian who must keep
                the road clear!

II. \\#9\\ Submission to God. I see three phrases that demonstrate how
     we should submit to God.
    A. We must submit to His holiness.

Matt 6:9 …Hallowed be thy name.

        1. If a thing is hallowed it means it is holy, something to
            be revered, respected.
        2. Jesus says of God’s name that it is holy, to be revered.
        3. This is taught throughout the Bible.

Ex 20:7 Thou shalt not take the name of the LORD
thy God in vain; for the LORD will not hold him
guiltless that taketh his name in vain.

        4. Why is God’s name holy?
            a. Because the God that the name refers to is holy.
            b. Understand, holiness is not what God does. It is what
                God is.
            c. His very nature is holy. Our very nature is sinful.
            d. Salvation makes it possible for these two opposites
to be connected but for there to be any long term
relationship between us, we are going to have to
                change.
            e. We are going to have to submit to His holiness.
        5. The missing element in modern-day worship is our need to
abandon sin and seek after holiness!
            a. People don’t think we should have to change.
            b. We are more of a casual, "come-as-you-are," take-me-
                or-leave-me kind of people.
            c. Friend, that will not fly with God!
            d. We have forgotten how holy God is!
                (1) \\#Is 6:3\\ Sinless beings called angels fly
about Him day and night and do nothing but
                      announce His holiness.
                (2) Both Daniel and John fell at the feet of His
                     holy angels as dead men.
                (3) \\#Rev 1:14-15\\ - John said He had eyes like a
flame and feet like burning brass.
        6. God being holy and we being naturally sinful requires a
dramatic change in our nature! We, the leopard, must
            change our spots!
        7. We must turn away from sin which is our nature.
            a. By nature we are selfish, putting our self first.
            b. By nature we are stubborn, we resist change.
            c. By nature we are self-reliant, thinking we have our
                own strength.
            d. By nature we are self-righteous, thinking we are okay.
    B. We must submit to His authority.

Matt 6:10 Thy kingdom come.

        1. A kingdom requires a King and a King speaks of absolute
authority. That is, we do what He tells us to do.
        2. There are two ways God tells us what to do.
            a. His Word

Ps 119:105 Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and
a light unto my path.

2Ti 3:16 All scripture is given by inspiration
of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for
reproof, for correction, for instruction in
righteousness:

                (1) I believe in studying and understanding the
Bible; however, before you can understand the
Bible, you will first have to submit to the
                     Bible.
                (2) We don’t have understand it, like it, or even
want to do what it says to obey it.
                (3) God is King. Do what He says.
                (4) Not what He "said" but "says." God speaks
                     through His Word today.
            b. His Holy Spirit.

Joh 16:13 Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth,
is come, he will guide you into all truth….

    C. We must submit to His will.

Matt 6:10 …Thy will be done in earth, as it
is in heaven.

        1. You might think that if we submit to God’s holiness and to
His authority, that about sums it up; but it does not.
            a. There is a third and perhaps the most difficult
surrender for us to make if we are to pray and
                worship God as Jesus did.
            b. We must submit to His will.
            c. That means that we are not just doing what God says,
but we do what God wants.
        2. To submit to God’s will we must know more than just the
Word and more than what the Holy Spirit has revealed.
            We must learn God’s heart!

Acts 13:22 And when he had removed him, he
raised up unto them David to be their king; to
whom also he gave testimony, and said, I have
found David the son of Jesse, a man after mine
own heart, which shall fulfil all my will.

            a. David wanted more than any man had ever had with God.
            b. He wanted to know Him so thoroughly that he knew God’s
                loves, hates, and His thought.
        3. This requires time and meditation before God, along with
an abandonment of self and the world.
