Daniel 11:40
When There Is No Peace
Last week, we were noticing how God would judge the world during the
seven-year, Jewish Tribulation. I mentioned three kinds of
judgments:
1. Man-Made judgments (wicked leadership, the natural cruelty of
men to men, and war)
2. Natural Judgments (earthquakes, the objects of heaven both
malfunctioning and falling from their places)
3. Spiritual Judgments - Demons and Satan being unleashed upon
the planet
But we were looking specifically at the Bible texts which describe
the wars (or military campaigns) that the Bible mentions.
1. I do not know all that will happen or the order in which these
things will happen.
2. I am just sharing Bible verses that tell that wars will happen
and noting what the verses do say.
I. We looked at:
A. \\#Daniel 9:24-27\\ and noted that even during the time
between the 69th and 70th week, there were to be military
conquests within Israel:
Dan 9:26 …the people of the prince that shall
come shall destroy the city and the sanctuary…
and unto the end of the war, desolations are
determined.
1. I acknowledge that HAS happened with Rome being the army
that both crucified Jesus and destroyed the city and the
sanctuary.
2. But \\#Dan 2:44\\ tells us the kings of Rome will rule
again, and I merely suggest the possibility that they may
be aggressive toward Israel even BEFORE the Tribulation
resumes, aggression that will lead to a covenant that
will START the Tribulation.
3. It appears that the Jews will have the land that the
Muslim Dome of the Rock is presently resting upon at
this time; and I know of no way they will get that as
long as the Muslims in that area are alive and powerful;
and I know of nothing that will remove their presence and
power but a war in which they are defeated.
4. \\#Dan 9:27\\ does indicate the 70th week will begin with
the signing of a covenant.
(a) Could that be a peace covenant?
(b) Maybe and maybe not.
B. \\#Revelation 6:1-8\\ Seals 1, 2, and 4 all speak of a great
conquest to take place around the beginning of the
Tribulation.
1. I don’t know if it is before, at, or after the Tribulation
begins but it is around the beginning of the Tribulation.
a. The first seal releases a spirit of conquest.
b. The second seal releases war and bloodshed.
c. The fourth seal gives 1/4 of the world to Death and
Hell to spread war, disease, death, and of course,
damnation throughout.
2. The Bible does not give us ANY details of this hostility.
a. We do not know where, how, or when it starts.
b. Neither do we know for how long it will last.
c. We only know as much as 1/4 of the world will suffer
from it.
II. \\#Daniel 11:36-12:1\\
A. To me, this is one of the most difficult prophetic chapters in
the Bible.
1. It deals with military battles which HAVE and ARE to take
place north, south, east, and through the nation of
Israel.
a. Most that I know of would say the majority of the
chapter was literally fulfilled in history.
b. Our goal is not to study Daniel or prophecies already
fulfilled; but if you are interested, you can find
information on these now historical events.
2. However, most would also agree that beginning at verse 36,
the text has stopped talking fulfilled history and is
describing the anti-Christ. (Some would say that shift
occurs as early as verse 29 or 31.)
a. But neither is the anti-Christ our topic either.
b. What we are interested in are future battles.
B. \\#Dan 11:40\\ seems to discuss that topic.
1. Notice the time signature given:
Dan 11:40 And at the time of the end…
a. Granted that is vague, but I think it moves us to an
end-time prophecy.
b. It continues to speak of events that have not happened
yet!
Dan 11:40 And at the time of the end shall the
king of the south push at him: and the king of
the north shall come against him like a
whirlwind, with chariots, and with horsemen, and
with many ships; and he shall enter into the
countries, and shall overflow and pass over.
2. Notice that this unfulfilled narration seems to be
speaking of the same kings fighting the same kind of wars
in the future that they fought in the past.
a. I don’t understand all of this, and I have not found
anything that helps me to understand it all.
(1) Remember one of the rules that I use.
(2) If the Bible does not explain itself, either here
or somewhere else, I will just have to wait to
see how God will do it.
(3) I am satisfied to wait to see how all of this
unfolds.
b. \\#40\\ But even without understanding all of it, some
of it certainly speaks of military battles between
the north and the south, and the battles being on top
of Israel.
(1) In the prophecies fulfilled, the northern kingdom
was Syria and the southern kingdom was Egypt;
but in this section, they don’t seem to be
fighting one another.
(2) They seem to be fighting the ANTI-CHRIST.
Dan 11:41 …but these shall escape out of
HIS hand…
(3) The anti-Christ WAS the one we believe was being
discussed in \\#Dan 11:36-39\\.
(4) He still seems to be the object of the male
pronouns in these verses.
c. \\#41\\ The conflict in that area seems to draw the
anti-Christ into the "glorious land."
Dan 11:41 He shall enter also into the glorious
land….
(1) The only land that I know of that God in His holy
Book would call glorious is Israel.
(2) And for some reason, the kings of the north and
south seem to "push at him."
(a) The word means to push like to rams charging
one another.
(b) It seems to be symbolic for to go to war
with.
(3) We do not know why, but when he does come in,
many countries will be "overthrown."
Dan 11:41 …and many countries shall be
overthrown…
(a) I take that to mean defeated.
(b) But we are specifically told that three of
Israel’s neighbors will not be conquered:
Dan 11:41 …but these shall escape out of his
hand, even Edom, and Moab, and the chief of the
children of Ammon.
(c) And that Egypt and beyond will NOT.
Dan 11:42 He shall stretch forth his hand also
upon the countries: and the land of Egypt shall
not escape.
43 But he shall have power over the treasures
of gold and of silver, and over all the precious
things of Egypt: and the Libyans and the
Ethiopians shall be at his steps.
i. I don’t know why the three escape the
anti-Christ.
aa. It may be that they already have
a treaty with him.
bb. It maybe they have already been
defeated at the beginning of the
Tribulation.
cc. But Maybe not.
ii. And I don’t know why Egypt and Africa,
a much larger land mass does not
escape the anti-Christ.
aa. I do know there are a lot of
Bible prophecies concerning
Egypt’s defeat and conquest in
the book of Egypt which do NOT
appear to be fulfilled yet
bb. \\#43\\ Ethopia and Lybia are
mentioned in \\#Eze 38:5\\.
cc. Is it possible they will be
fulfilled during the time of the
anti-Christ?
dd. Maybe, but maybe not.
iii. I am content to wait and see.
d. However that is not the end of this prophecy of war.
Dan 11:44 But tidings out of the east and out of
the north shall trouble him: therefore he shall
go forth with great fury to destroy, and utterly
to make away many.
(1) It appears that he has been fighting with the
north, the south, and now something comes from
the north and east to disturb him.
(2) I don’t know if it is another front on the war
against this future ruler or not, but I do know
what he hears will cause him to "go forth with
great fury to destroy and UTTERLY MAKE AWAY
MANY."
(a) That is a strange phrase.
(b) It seems that he leave determined to destroy
many.
(3) All of that makes it sound like the anti-Christ
is fighting the north, south, and east (of
Israel) all at about the same time.
3. When might this be? There is a clue.
a. \\#12:1\\ "And at that time shall Michael stand up…."
(1) \\#Dan 10:21\\ Michael was called Daniel’s
prince, meaning Daniel’s leader or ruler.
(2) That means Michael is Daniel’s angel, the one
appointed by God to watch over him and guide
him.
(3) And I really don’t think he was just Daniel’s
angel but Israel’s angel as well.
b. When Michael stands up to help Israel, it is because
they are in great danger and because God is going to
start protecting them again.
(1) God has not done much protecting of Israel in the
last 2,000 years.
(a) Why?
(b) Because they rejected their Messiah.
(2) When do you suppose Michael will start protecting
Israel again?
(a) Daniel was given two clues in the verse:
Dan 12:1 And at that time shall Michael stand
up, the great prince which standeth for the
children of thy people: and there shall be a
time of trouble, such as never was since there
was a nation even to that same time: and at that
time thy people shall be delivered, every one
that shall be found written in the book.
i. It will be a time of trouble like
Israel has never had since they were
a nation.
aa. Israel will have to go some
distance for that!
bb. I believe that will be when the
Abomination of Desolations
occurs \\#Dan 9:27\\, when the
anti-Christ breaks his treaty
with Israel.
cc. That is also what Jesus called
the "great tribulation."
Matt 24:15 When ye therefore shall see the
abomination of desolation, spoken of by Daniel
the prophet, stand in the holy place, whoso
readeth, let him understand:
Matt 24:21 For then shall be great tribulation,
such as was not since the beginning of the
world to this time, no, nor ever shall be.
dd. According to Daniel 9:27, that
will happen in the "midst" of
the seventieth week.
ii. And Michael is going to stand up to
deliver the Jews whose names are
written in the book.
aa. You can suppose what you will
about that, but I am going to
suppose that is the Book of Life
and that this is an indication
Israel has been saved.
bb. God told us they would
\\#Romans 11:26\\.
cc. And I also believe that will
happen around the middle of the
Tribulation.
III. Summary
A. Of the wars:
1. Daniel 9 - I think it is possible that there will be a war
to start the Tribulation, i.e. kings of Rome against
Israel.
2. Rev 6 - There will be a conquest that will involve 1/4 of
the world.
3. Daniel 11 - Around the middle of the Tribulation, there
will be a conflict between with the areas north, south,
and east of Israel as they seem to attack the anti-Christ.
4. At that same time, something will happen, presumably against
Israel, that will cause the Angel Michael to stand up for
Israel.
B. My guess is that while the anti-Christ is in that area:
1. He will go into the temple to proclaim himself god
\\#2Thess 2.4\\
2. Israel will reject him and turn to Jesus Christ.
\\#Romans 11:26\\
3. The anti-Christ will break the 7 year treaty with Israel,
desecrate and destroy the temple, and begin to persecute
the Jews. \\#Dan 9:27, Matt 24:15\\
4. God will start protecting them, using miracles and Michael
their angel. \\#Dan 12:1\\
