Galatians 6:1-10
Fill It Up; Pour It Out

BOOK THEME - How far into Judaism must we go to be saved?
Chapters 1-2 - Defending the Gospel
Chapters 3-4 - Understanding the Law
Chapters 5-6 - Filled with the Spirit

Must emphasis the truth of chapters 5 & 6 again. It is a dangerous thing to
teach liberty without teaching the corresponding truth of being filled with the
Spirit! Such lack leads to carnality!

Paul understands this and, from the context, is telling us to help those who
fall into this trap.

    I. \\#Gal 6:1-2\\ The command is to restore.
        A. The Situation:
            1. Fallen Christian - Just wait. One will come.
            2. Spiritual Christian - Filled with the Spirit
                a. To be filled with the Spirit is the message of this Book.
                b. A lot of people talk about being filled with the Spirit.
                    Our actions are the proof.
        B. To be involved in the work of restoring fallen Christians requires
            Spirit-filled believers.
            1. To restore means to bring them back to a place where they can:
                a. Fellowship with God
                b. Obey God
                c. Be used of God.
            2. Sin is:
                a. Addictive
                b. Damaging
            3. The wisdom, the endurance, the patience, the kindness - all will
be needed and all will have to come from the Holy Spirit.

II. \\#Gal 6:3-10\\ What are some of the characteristics?
        A Requires understanding.
            1. This is the idea behind the "meekness." It means to be gentle.
            2. The problem is that we can be:
                (a) Impatient of those who fall.
                     (1) Why don’t they just do right?
                     (2) They’ll never learn.
                (b) Condemning of those who fall.
                     (1) They did this to themselves.
                     (2) They knew better. What did they expect?
                     (3) Serves them right!
                     (4) I told them so.
            3. The solution is to realize just how easily we ourselves can fall.
        B. Requires empathy - a self-emptying.
            1. \\#2\\ Bear - The word means to pick them up and carry them.
            2. The damage of sin is total:
                a. Mind
                b. Social life - They may be all alone and others fed up with
                    them.
                c. Finances
                d. Health
            3. These kind of situations are not simple with quick solutions.
                a. While you are working to restore, help take the load of them.
                b. Do not simply be content with what you can do, but do what
the Lord would have you do to ease their troubles.
        C. \\#3\\ Requires humility.
            1. The "FOR" tells us that this is another requirement of helping
                restore the fallen Christian.
            2. The characteristic is a type of humility but it is specific.
            3. If you think yourself too good to help a fallen Christian, you
                are not spiritual at all.

From the depths of his pit of despair,
Christian’s cry for help filled the air.
A second Christian went over to see,
But was convinced, “Such things could never happen to me.
Suddenly the ground under his feet gave out,
He hit the bottom with wonder and doubt.
There is a moral to this man’s slippery slide,
He fell because he stood on the banks of self-righteousness and pride.

        D. \\#6:2, 4-6\\ Requires responsibility.
            1. Two verses speak of responsibility. They seem to contradict.
            2. \\#2\\ The first commands the spiritual Christian to carry the
                fallen Christian.
            3. \\#4-6\\ The second tells us that we are each responsible for
                ourselves.
            4. Several explanations.
                a. Even though we are helping them, they must help themselves.
                b. Both commands could also be to the spiritual Christian.
                    (1) \\#2\\ As a spiritual Christian, I must carry my fallen
                         comrades.
                    (2) \\#4\\ As a spiritual Christian, I am proving my own
walk with the Lord when I carry them.
                    (3) \\#4\\ Hence, I have rejoicing regardless of what
                         others do.
                    (4) \\#6\\ I am doing right because I have been taught to
                         do right.
                    (5) \\#5\\ I have obeyed the Lord; I have carried out my
responsibility; I have fulfilled my burden.
                    (6) Let me describe our attitude and responsibility again.
                        a. I am not helping just for the sake of the fallen.
                        b. I am helping because this is the right thing to do.
                        c. I have been taught good things by the Lord and I have
communicated or done what I have been taught.
                        d. Regardless of success or failure of the fallen
Christian, I will rejoice for I have done right.
                        e. I have proved the Spirit of God is filling me by my
                            actions.

I am not finished with these characteristics but will stop. What we have here
is an another example of the Bible complimenting itself.

James 2:18 Yea, a man may say, Thou hast faith, and I have works: shew me thy
faith without thy works, and I will shew thee my faith by my works.

        E. \\#6:7-10\\ Wisdom
            A. To restore a fallen Christian, we must see things as God
sees them. Not only do we need wisdom, so does he/she. It is
possible that the reason they have fallen is because they did
not yield to the Holy Spirit.
            B. Three principals need to be understood both by us and those we
                are trying to help.
                1. \\#7-8\\ You will sow what you reap.
                    a. Paul is using a parable like illustration to teach truth.
                    b. Like with seeds, you will reap what you sow.
                        (1) There are only two types of life to be lived.
                            (a) A life lived for God will reap a godly life.
                            (b) A life lived for self, pleasure, and the devil,
will reap a corrupt, sinful life.
                        (2) Let’s get it simple and make it straight forward.
                            (a) Good relationships don’t come with sinful people.
                            (b) Good experiences don’t come out of sinful places.
(bars, dance halls, night clubs, back seats)
                            (c) A good life doesn’t come from sinful actions.
                                (Lying, stealing, drinking, drugs, lazy)
                    c. Like with seeds, you will reap more than you sow.
                    d. Like with seeds, you will reap later than you sow.
                    e. What God is saying is that if this did not happen, God
would be allowing Himself to be mocked (made fun of) by
you. SO IT IS GOING TO HAPPEN!
                2. To the godly, don’t quit before you reap the good you have
                    sown.
                    a. Like with seeds, you reap later than you sow.
                    b. Even strong Christians can become easily discouraged.
Prayers for people do not appear to be answered.
                        Ministry doesn’t seem successful.
Bad circumstances even though they have lived right.
                    c. How much easier a Christian who has fallen?
                    d. We must remember and we must teach them.
                        (1) We don’t do right for God just to get from Him.
                        (2) Our reward is over there and not here.
                        (3) The last chapter has not been written yet.
                3. Don’t miss the opportunity to do good, especially to for a
                    Christian.
                    a. This is again a teaching of responsibility. I do right
because it is the right thing to do.
                        (1) It helps the individual.
                        (2) It helps the body of Christ.
                    b. But it is also therapy.
                        (1) Helping others will take your mind off your own
                             troubles.
                        (2) Helping others will grow you in the grace. It is
part of the Christian evolution to maturity.

  III. \\#Gal 6:11-18\\ Closing
        A. \\#Gal 6:11\\ Paul’s handwritten closing.
            1. Large letters
            2. Possible indication of bad eye sight.
        B. Summary of the main purpose:
            1. Dealing with the Judaizers who wanted the Christians to keep the
                Law for salvation.
            2. \\#6:12\\ They are not willing to suffer for Jesus.
            3. \\#6:13\\ They do not keep the Law they are trying to impose on
                the new converts.
            4. \\#6:15\\ The only thing important to salvation is being born
again and made into a new creature.
        C. Paul’s determinations
            1. \\#6:14\\ Paul will make much of the cross they seek to avoid.
            2. \\#6:17\\ Paul determines not to be bothered by the allegations
                against him.
                a. In the first two chapters, Paul had to defend himself to
                    defend the gospel he preached.
                b. This is probably one of the earliest of Paul’s writings.
                c. He has proved He loved the Lord by what he had endured.
                d. While he hoped this letter would lay the issue of his apostle-
ship to rest, it did not and he would have to speak to the
                    subject again.
