Luke 1:26-36
The Good News Begins

We continue with our study of the Gospel of Luke. So far:
I. \\#1:1-4\\ The Writer’s Introduction
II. \\#1:5-80\\ Proclamations-We might call this the
proclamation chapter for there are four proclamation in it.
    A. \\#1:5-25\\ Gabriel’s Proclamation to Zacharias
    B. \\#1:26-38\\ Gabriel’s Proclamation to Mary -Blesses Christ
    C. \\#1:41-45\\ Elisabeth’s Proclamation-Blesses Mary
    D. \\#1:46-56\\ Mary’s Proclamation-Blesses God
    E. \\#1:67-80\\ Zacharias’ Proclamation-Describes the impact
Messiah’s coming will have on Israel.

We need to remember that Jesus was a Jewish Messiah promised to a
Jewish people, born to a Jewish girl, who walked among a Jewish
nation until He was surrendered by the Jewish elite to die on a
Jewish hillside and be buried in a Jewish tomb on a Jewish holy day,
then on the third day He arose to appear to Jews until He ascended
to haven from a Jewish mountain where He abides until He returns to
set up a world-wide kingdom which He will reign over from the Jewish
capitol.

Let’s start by looking at what Gabriel had to say about Jesus.

I. Gabriel’s Proclamation Of Jesus
    A. Mary’s Child will be virgin born.
        1. This is the angel’s testimony.

Luke 1:35 And the angel answered and said unto
her, The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and
the power of the Highest shall overshadow thee:
therefore also that holy thing which shall be
born of thee shall be called the Son of God.

        2. It’s Mary’s testimony.

Luke 1:34 Then said Mary unto the angel, How
shall this be, seeing I know not a man?

        3. The Bible’s testimony.

Luke 1:27 "Gabriel was sent" To a virgin
espoused to a man whose name was Joseph, of
the house of David; and the virgin’s name was
Mary.

        4. In our culture today, we have to also define "virgin."
            a. Mary did that for us in saying that she had never
"known" or had sexual relations with a man.
            b. She was "untouched" in any sexual manner.
            c. She had both been kept and kept herself as the Bible
                tells us that God wants.
        5. So how did she conceive?
            a. \\#35\\ The angel answered that.
            b. God supernaturally supplied the seed that was needed
                for Mary to become pregnant.
            c. Remember, this was not the conception of a person but
                merely a body.
                (1) Jesus already was.
                (2) He is the eternal God who begin in the womb but
                     merely took up residence there.
        6. Understanding this is very important? Why?
            a. That is what the Bible says and if it is not what
happened, the Bible is not true.
            b. If Jesus had man’s seed He would have also had man’s
                sin.

Ro 5:12 Wherefore, as by ONE MAN sin entered
into the world, and death by sin; and so death
passed upon all men, for that all have sinned:

                (1) Eve may have sinned first but it is not through
the woman that sin is passed.
                (2) It is through the man, Adam.
                (3) So God used Eve’s egg but used a Divine seed.
        7. We must guard against foolish suppositions.
            a. There was nothing physical or sensual about Jesus’
conception. It was done by a supernatural act if
                God.

Tit 1:15 Unto the pure all things are pure:
but unto them that are defiled and unbelieving
is nothing pure….

            b. This is the first and last time such an event will
                 ever happen.
                 (1) We have only two created Adams.
                 (2) The first Adam had a body created and God
                      breathed life into Him.
                 (3) The last Adam had a body created and God stepped
                      into Him.
    B. Jesus is the Son of God.
        1. Jesus is called the "Son of God" \\#35\\ and "Son of the
            Highest" \\#32\\.
        2. We must understand that the word "Son" here does not mean
the same thing as it literally does to us.
            a. The word does mean "off spring" or "child" and it is
in the Greek masculine which would make Jesus a Son,
                but still there are differences.
            b. When my sons and daughters were conceived, they were
                new being just beginning.
                (1) That is NOT what the Bible means by using the
                     word "Son."
                (2) When God applied the title of "Son" to Jesus He
                     was not thinking of ORIGINS.
            c. The Bible clearly teaches us that Jesus had no
                beginning \\#John 1:1, 14, 6:38, Php 2:6-7\\.
        3. It is the other aspect of sonship that caused God to
use the image of a "Son," NATURE.
            a. One’s child, while unique, is still the composite of
                the parents.
            b. Jesus has two natures:
                (1) He is called the Son of man 81 times in the
gospels, meaning from Mary Jesus got His human
                     nature—without sin.
                (2) He is called the Son of God 28 times in the
gospels meaning He is the nature of God.
        4. So the phrase "Son of God" emphasizes not the origin of
Jesus but the nature of Jesus. Jesus is God.
    C. \\#32\\ Jesus is "great."

Luke 1:32 He shall be great….

        1. Great is typically a comparative term.
            a. If I pull a penny out and say it is a "great" penny,
you would likely ask, "What makes it so great?"
            b. All pennies are pretty much the same so for it to
be great, something has to make it superior.
        2. For the angel to call Jesus "great" something had to
            make Him superior.
        3. How was Jesus superior?
            a. The angel was talking to a human. Jesus is certainly
superior to a human—in every way.
            b. An angel was speaking. Jesus is certainly superior to
                an angel—in every way.
        4. But even though the word "great" implies a comparison,
            there is none made.
            a. The angel did not say greater or greatest.
            b. He just said "GREAT," meaning that nothing can
compare to Jesus for Jesus is superior to all.
    D. \\#32-33\\ Jesus is King.

Luke 1:32 …and the Lord God shall give unto
him the throne of his father David:
33 And he shall reign over the house of Jacob
for ever….

        1. The angel speaks only of Jesus being the Jewish King.
            a. This comes back to Jesus being the Jewish Messiah
                fulfilling the Jewish promises.
            b. But at Jesus coronation, He will not be merely the
                King of the Jews!
        2. Jesus is King over the kings and Lord over the Lords.
        3. Some might say, "Jesus lived and died and never became
            king."
            a. I would answer, "It’s not over yet!"
            b. That is the thing about being "eternal." There is
                always a tomorrow.
   E. \\#33\\ Jesus is eternal.

Luke 1:33 …and of his kingdom there shall be no
end.

        1. The eternality that is being mentioned here is only
            one dimensional.
            a. It considers only one direction-once Jesus starts to
                reign, He will never stop.
            b. And it considers only one aspect-Jesus’ reign.
        2. As already mentioned, Jesus is eternal and much more than
            a Jewish King.
        3. However, for the Jew, this aspect was sweet indeed.
    F. \\#31\\ Jesus is the Savior.

Luke 1:31 And, behold, thou shalt conceive in
thy womb, and bring forth a son, and shalt call
his name JESUS.

        1. Interestingly, the first thing told Mary about her coming
Child was not in a description but in His name.
            a. The name Jesus is Greek for the Hebrew Joshua.
            b. Both mean Deliverer or Savior.
        2. The angel told Mary that she was to conceive the Savior.
            a. It is hard to know if she really understood all that
                was taking place.
            b. That a being of glory was standing before her there
                was no question.
            c. That she was willing to do whatever God wanted her to
                do is also without question.
            d. However, the Bible says of her….

Lu 2:19 But Mary kept all these things, and
pondered them in her heart.

        3. If Mary did not understand, she soon would. Her Son is
            the Savior of the world.

Although this is a Wednesday evening and the crowd is the backbone of
the church, we can never be so certain that everyone here is saved
that we neglect to remind ourselves that Jesus is the Savior of the
World but to be your Savior, you must invite Him into your heart.

Would you do that tonight?
