Luke 19:11-27
A Prophecy Parable

As the title might suggest, this parable was a prophecy. Jesus was
still in or near Jericho. All the gospel accounts indicate Jericho
was the last major city Jesus visited before entering Jerusalem for
His Triumphant Entry and a few days later, His crucifixion.

Luke revealed to us that Jesus took the time to tell those who would
listen what the future would hold. While everything in this parable
was future prophecy to the disciples, some of it has since been
fulfilled for us.

I. \\#12-15\\ A Nobleman Went to Receive A Kingdom
    A. This parable used the feudal system as it’s back drop.
        1. A nobleman was a man of wealth, power, and "breeding."
            a. There were an abundance of noblemen, more than
                positions for them to inherit.
            b. I suspect many of them were cousins, descendants of
                kings.
        2. This nobleman was being appointed to rule over a kingdom.
        3. At that time, Israel was a nation being ruled over by an
emperor whose kings and rulers were appointed by the
emperor so they would have understood what the parable
            very well.
    B. The Nobleman in this parable was Jesus.
        1. \\#12\\ Jesus was telling those who would listen that He
            was about to leave.

Luke 19:12 He said therefore, A certain nobleman
went into a far country to receive for himself a
kingdom, and to return.

            a. He was to go to a "far country" meaning He would be
                gone for a long time.
            b. But even in His leaving, He was the King.
                (1) The kingdom was not to be His when He returned.
                (2) While He was gone, He would receive and be King.
                (3) Jesus’ death and resurrection changed the roles
                      of Jesus.
                       1. Jesus was always God but He was playing
the role of a nobleman. (We know it
                           better as a Lamb.)

Phi 2:6 Who, being in the form of God, thought
it not robbery to be equal with God:
7 But made himself of no reputation, and took
upon him the form of a servant, and was made in
the likeness of men:

                       2. Once He died and rose, Jesus took the role
                           of King.
            c. And He would return. (As surely as Jesus came, so He
                will return!)
        2. \\#14\\ Jesus was also telling them that the world would
            reject Him.

Luke 19:14 But his citizens hated him, and sent
a message after him, saying, We will not have
this man to reign over us.

            a. You can’t say it any plainer than that.
            b. The citizens are the unsaved.
                (1) Some think they are respectful, God-honoring lost
                     people.
                (2) There is no such thing.
                (3) One either yields to the King or is a rebel
                     against Him.
        3. \\#27\\ Jesus was telling them that those who reject Him
            will be destroyed,

Luke 19:27 But those mine enemies, which would
not that I should reign over them, bring hither,
and slay them before me.

            a. That is only an earthly comparison of what will be
                done to Christ’s rejecters.
            b. In actuality, they will be cast into hell.

II. \\#13-27\\ But Some Would Serve
    A. The parable could have ended there.
        1. This is where most Christians would rather it ended.
        2. They would say they are the saved and the servants. Their
place would be secured and they might even expect a
            reward for their service.
    B. But the parable goes on to tell us that not all who are
        servants serve.
        1. Notice what happened to all servants.

Luke 19:13 And he called his ten servants, and
delivered them ten pounds, and said unto them,
Occupy till I come.

            a. \\#13\\ They are all given the same orders.
                (1) Occupy - The word means to stay busy, to trade.
                (2) The order means more than just stay there. It
means to fill up the area and to be profitable.
            b. They are all given something to work with.
                (1) A pound
                (2) That does not mean we are all given the same
gift but we are all given the same GIVER.
                (3) The emphasis is not on what we can do but what we
                     will do.
            c. \\#15\\ They will all be called before the same Judge.
        2. But from there, things become very individualized.
            a. Here is where our prophecy begins.
            b. Thus far, we have been seeing what God HAD done for
                His servants.
            c. For example - He has been assigning and empowering
                them.
            d. That is what God has done for every child of God!
        3. Now we begin to see what WILL happen to them,
            individually.
            a. Each will stand before God alone.
                (1) This is the saved.
                (2) This is called the Bema Seat.

2Cor 5:10 For we must all appear before the
judgment seat of Christ; that every one may
receive the things done in his body, according
to that he hath done, whether it be good or bad.
11 Knowing therefore the terror of the Lord, we
persuade men; but we are made manifest unto God;
and I trust also are made manifest in your
consciences.

                     (a) Paul called it a terrorizing event.
                     (b) \\#11\\ Paul indicated that at least one of
the major judgments would be whether we
                          persuaded men or not.
                            i. Persuaded them to what?
ii. Persuaded them to come to Christ,
            b. Each will be judged based on what he/she had done.
                (1) \\#16-19\\ The first two were given the same gift
                     but produced different gains.
                (2) The second only produced half what the first
                     produced.
                (3) Yet both were praised and given comparable
                     rewards.
                (4) God does not expect everyone to produce the same
                     results.
            c. \\#20-23\\ Each slacker will be judged.
                (1) We are still speaking of the saved here. The
Bema Seat is for the saved.
                (2) This man hid his talent.
                     (a) He put it in a napkin and hid it.
                     (b) That is what you need to see.
                     (c) Some want to focus on the accusation the
                          slacker made.
                     (d) Forget that. That only demonstrates that it
does not matter what your reason is for
doing nothing, God is going to take it a
part and use it to judge you.
                     (e) The key is that the Christian hid the gift
God gave him and did nothing with it.
            d. Each Christian serving servant will be awarded.

Luke 19:24 And he said unto them that stood by,
Take from him the pound, and give it to him that
hath ten pounds.
25 (And they said unto him, Lord, he hath ten
pounds.)
26 For I say unto you, That unto every one which
hath shall be given; and from him that hath not,
even that he hath shall be taken away from him.

                (1) This is more than a parable’s reward. It is a
                     principal.
                (2) It means that those who obey their King will be
                     rewarded more and more.
                     (a) He already had the ten pounds.
                           i. \\#25\\ The master did not take it from
him and they seemed to think that was
                               enough.
ii. He was already the ruler over 10
                               cities.
                     (b) But the King gave him even more and
                         indicated more could come.
