Luke 19:28-34
He’s Here
Jesus Farewell Tour was complete.
Luke 9:51 And it came to pass, when the time was
come that he should be received up, he stedfastly
set his face to go to Jerusalem,
From that verse until Luke 19:27, Jesus had been traveling to
Jerusalem. Now He has arrived.
Jesus came to over the Jews a kingdom and a King. This was a real and
legitimate offer. While the offer has been on the table for 3 1/2
years, the events of the Triumphant Entry fulfill a prophecy which
the Jews fulfilled that day and should have been recognized by the
people as a prophecy to identity the Messiah.
Zech 9:9 Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion;
shout, O daughter of Jerusalem: behold, thy King
cometh unto thee: he is just, and having
salvation; lowly, and riding upon an ass, and
upon a colt the foal of an ass.
Tonight, we study that offer.
I. \\#29-35\\ The PREPARATION - Some thing needed to happen BEFORE
Jesus entered Jerusalem.
A. The LOCATION - Where did these events take place?
Luke 19:29 And it came to pass, when he was come
nigh to Bethphage and Bethany…
1. These are two cities on the Mount of Olives about 1/2
mile apart, with the closer of the two to Jerusalem
being Bethphage.
a. \\#John 12:1\\ tells us that Jesus came first to
Bethany. That is where Jesus ate a meal with Mary,
Martha, and Lazarus.
b. Then He went to the Bethphage to begin His entry into
Jerusalem. \\#Matt 21:1\\
2. Someone has selected a rock in Bethphage of which they
claim Jesus climbed upon to mount the colt. (Tradition)
B. The OCCASION - When did these events take place?
1. It is at this time that Luke passes the "Detail Baton" to
John.
a. Luke has given us an amazing amount of details
concerning Jesus’ Farewell Journey.
b. The others mentioned a few of the events but much of
what Luke wrote is not in the other gospels.
c. Now John will start giving the details of Jesus’s very
last days.
(1) From John 12-17, Jesus will detail the last five
days of Jesus’ life.
(2) In doing so, John will record events that no
other gospel writer will give to us.
2. One of these details is found in John 12:1, 12.
John 12:1 Then Jesus six days before the
passover came to Bethany….
a. Most believe that the Passover was on Thursday that
year.
b. Six days before that would have Jesus arriving on
Friday to Bethany.
c. \\#John 12:2-11\\ describe a supper that was held for
Jesus that night.
(1) Remember that a new day started at sunset so the
supper would be their Sabbath Supper.
(2) A Sabbath Supper was and is the custom of some
Jews to have a large meal as the Sabbath begins.
(3) The food is prepared on Fri-DAY. Only the eating
is done on the Sabbath so the law is not broken.
(4) So we have Jesus arriving on Friday, eating the
Sabbath meal that night on what would be their
Saturday.
3. Then John 12:12 describes that "On the next day," Jesus
entered Jerusalem.
a. The "next day" after the Sabbath would be Sunday, the
first day of the week.
b. Matthew tells us that Jesus was in Bethphage then.
Matt 21:1 And when they drew nigh unto
Jerusalem, and were come to Bethphage, unto the
mount of Olives, then sent Jesus two disciples,
4. So if the Passover was on Thursday that year, we know
three things Jesus did and the day He did them on.
a. He arrived at Bethany on Friday.
b. He ate a Sabbath Supper on Saturday.
c. He entered Jerusalem, the Triumphant Entry, on Sunday.
C. The TRANSPORTATION - A Colt Was Needed
Luke 19:30 Saying, Go ye into the village over
against you; in the which at your entering ye
shall find a colt tied, whereon yet never man
sat: loose him, and bring him hither.
31 And if any man ask you, Why do ye loose him?
thus shall ye say unto him, Because the Lord hath
need of him.
a. Jesus sent for a particular colt.
b. This was an event that Jesus made happen.
c. The Bible does not indicate that Jesus made any
arrangements in advance except through the Holy Ghost,
but Jesus specifically sent for a colt that He knew had
never been ridden upon and in so doing set the stage for
Zechariah’s prophetic fulfillment.
D. \\#32-35\\ The CONSIDERATION
1. The owner released the colt to the disciples.
2. While no earthly arrangements had been made, God had
already worked in the owner of the colt’s heart.
a. The attire of the disciples would not have allowed
them to be confused with an earthly lord of that
time.
b. Likely, they would have looked much more like
peasants.
3. Yet, the owner let the colt go.
4. The Bible does not give us the details, but I am going
to suppose the owner knew it was going to Jesus and
agreed with the disciples in calling Jesus LORD.
5. This was another in the many people who showed kindness
to Jesus.
a. \\#John 12:3\\ Mary anointed Jesus’ feet with
spikenard.
b. \\#Matt 27:32\\ Simon bore His cross.
c. \\#John 19:38-42\\ Joseph of Arimathea furnished
Him a tomb.
d. \\#John 19:39\\ Nicodemus gave 100 pounds of spices.
II. The PRESENTATION - Jesus was presenting Himself as
King of Israel.
A. The Messiah’s Offer
Luke 19:35 And they brought him to Jesus: and
they cast their garments upon the colt, and they
set Jesus thereon.
36 And as he went, they spread their clothes in
the way.
37 And when he was come nigh, even now at the
descent of the mount of Olives, the whole
multitude of the disciples began to rejoice and
praise God with a loud voice for all the mighty
works that they had seen;
38 Saying, Blessed be the King that cometh in
the name of the Lord: peace in heaven, and glory
in the highest.
1. Jesus rode on the back of an unridden ass into Jerusalem.
2. \\#Matt 21:2,7\\ Actually a mother and colt were brought
to Jesus.
3. \\#1Kings 1:33-40\\ This is similar to what David
commanded Nathan, Zadok, and Beniah to do when he
proclaimed Solomon to be the king of Israel.
4. \\#Zech 9:9\\ prophesied the event.
B. The People Understood
1. They took off their coats and spread them in the path.
2. \\#Mark 11:8\\ Some cut down palm branches and do
likewise.
3. They all began to shout "Hosanna," Save us! \\#Mk 11:9\\
and to pronounce blessings upon the One who came in the
Lord’s name (referring to Jesus).
4. The people were doing what Nathan, Zadok, and Beniah had
done for Solomon!
C. The Pharisee’s Were Uncomfortable
Luke 19:39 And some of the Pharisees from among
the multitude said unto him, Master, rebuke thy
disciples.
40 And he answered and said unto them, I tell
you that, if these should hold their peace, the
stones would immediately cry out.
1. The Pharisees were a jealous, blind people.
John 12:19 The Pharisees therefore said among
themselves, Perceive ye how ye prevail nothing?
behold, the world is gone after him.
2. They demanded that Jesus quieten the crowd.
3. Jesus, speaking of the importance of this event, said if
the people were quiet, the rocks would start shouting!
III. The IMPLICATION - What does this mean?
A. Jesus was offering Himself as the King of Israel.
1. This was what both John and Jesus had preached.
Matt 3:1 In those days came John the Baptist,
preaching in the wilderness of Judaea,
2 And saying, Repent ye: for the kingdom of
heaven is at hand.
2. Some say Jesus lied, that He never intended to be the
King of the Jews. They are wrong.
3. Others say, "It was not a legitimate offer. Jesus knew
He had to die." God is God. He could have worked it
out.
4. No. The offer was real.
B. The people understood.
1. I don’t know how much they understood, but they had the
correct idea.
2. Jesus was there to save them, and He had come in the
Lord’s name.
3. What went wrong?
a. Jesus did not meet the people’s expectations of the
Jewish Messiah.
(1) \\#45\\ Instead of going to the palace, Jesus
went to the temple.
(2) \\#45-46\\ Instead of running Roman soldiers out
of town, Jesus ran Jewish crooks out of the
temple.
(3) \\#41-44\\ Instead of leading Israel in a joyous
celebration, Jesus sept over the demise of
Jerusalem.
(4) \\#47-48\\ Instead of installing Himself as King,
Jesus continued to teach.
b. Because Jesus does not live up to the expectations of
the people, they abandoned Him; and within a handful
of days, they demand that He be crucified!
IV. The EDUCATION - What can we learn?
A. Many lessons but let’s go with one.
B. While God’s prophecy is illuminating, man’s stubbornness can
be blinding.
1. The Jews were seeing prophecy fulfilled.
2. They even seemed to acknowledge it.
3. But within 5 days, just 120 hours, they would turn away
from Christ completely because He did not follow their
time table and fulfill their expectations.
