Luke 8:41-48
The Payment Was Due

We have hear two miracles undeniably linked together. These same two
miracles are recorded in unison in \\#Matt 9:18-26, #Mk 5:22-43\\.

These miracles started with Jairus’ daughter being sick.
     1. Both Mark and Luke make it clear that Jairus was the ruler of
a synagogue. By this time, there would be a lot of pressure
on the religious leaders by scribes and Pharisees that they
reject Jesus; yet Jairus was not ashamed to come to Jesus,
to confess him, and to plead for his daughter’s life.
         a. Matthew took it another step and says Jairus WORSHIPPED
             Jesus.

Mt 9:18 While he spake these things unto them,
behold, there came a certain ruler, and
worshipped him…

         b. This would indicate that Jairus’ overture to Jesus was
not just one of convenience or necessity but one of the
             heart.
     2. Notice that the one element that seems to have tied the two
miracles together is the time element.
         a. The time connection is more than the fact that one
happened at almost the same time as the other.
         b. Also notice that the sick girl was twelve years old
\\#42\\ and the sick woman had had the issue of blood
             for twelve years \\#43\\.
             (1) Life gives to some good and—at the very same time—
                  to some bad.
             (2) This should remind us that on our worst day, God is
going something good and on our best day, someone
                  needs a helping hand.

The three texts makes it clear that the two miracles are connected
by time, but we also have two distinct miracles from which we can
learn some completely different truths.

I. Note the suffering of the woman.
    A. The Bible makes it clear that suffering is to be a part of
        every person’s life.

Job 14:1 Man that is born of a woman is of few
days, and full of trouble.

Ecclesiastes 5:17 All his days also he eateth in
darkness, and he hath much sorrow and wrath with
his sickness.

    B. \\#43\\ This woman had "an issue of blood" for 12 years.
        1. The word for issue means "A FLUX, A CONTINUED FLOW;
            A FLOOD."
            a. This sounds like the regular cycle for women but for
this woman, it would not stop.
            b. This woman had suffered PHYSICALLY all this time.
        2. \\#Lev 15:1-2\\ states that anyone, man or woman, that
that had any kind of running issue from their body was
            declared unclean.
            a. That meant she was deprived of the privilege of
                offering sacrifices and offerings.
            b. For twelve years, this woman suffered SPIRITUALLY.
        3. To be unclean meant she was separated from society
            and family.
            a. The woman was limited to the people she could come
into contact with for her uncleanness (not the
disease but her ceremonial uncleanness) would spread
                to them.
            b. This meant the woman had suffered SOCIALLY all that
                time.
        4. \\#Mark 5:26\\ She had suffered many things of her
            physicians.
            a. Medicine in this day was primitive and probably
involved more charms and potions than science.
            b. While under the doctor’s care, she only grew worse
and probably suffered many unnecessary pains and
                aggravations.
            c. This meant the woman suffered MEDICALLY.
        5. \\#Luke 8:43\\ She spend all of her living on physicians.
            a. This speaks well of the lady.
            b. She was willing to give everything she possessed
to be well; but it speaks poorly of the doctors, they worked
who took all she had and did her no good at all.
            c. It took years to consume all of her wealth, perhaps
all twelve years, but now she was sick and broke.
            d. This meant that she suffered FINANCIALLY.

II. Note the draw to the Savior.
    A. The woman had heard of Jesus.

Mark 5:27 When she had heard of Jesus, came in
the press behind, and touched his garment.
28 For she said, If I may touch but his clothes,
I shall be whole.

    B. What had she heard?
        1. Probably she had heard of His power and compassion.
        2. There is something about Jesus that allures mankind to
            Him.
        3. In fact, there is something missing in the life of every
human that causes them to be in a constant search mode.
            a. People are looking for a purpose, a reason, an
explanation to why they exist and to why things
                happen as they do.
            b. Unfortunately, if they don’t soon hear of sin,
salvation, and Jesus; they will be drawn deeper into
                fields of sin.
                (1) Either their curiosity will pull them there
                     (i.e. looking for answers).
                (2) Or their frustration will bring them there (i.e.
                     Why is everything against me?)
    C. This woman came up from behind Jesus and with stealth touched
        His garment.

Luke 8:44 (She) Came behind him, and touched the
border of his garment: and immediately her issue
of blood stanched.

    D. Why?
        1. Maybe because of her unclean state.
        2. Maybe because she was poor and had nothing to offer.
        3. Maybe because she was ashamed of her physically problem.

III. Note the results of a touch.
    A. Immediately, her disease was healed.

Luke 8:44 …and immediately her issue of blood
stanched.

        1. The Greek word means to stand up. It came to a "stand
            still."
        2. Apparently, this happened without effort or permission on
            Jesus’ part.

Luke 8:45 And Jesus said, Who touched me?

            a. God has set many things up in this world as laws.
            b. They are so universal and consistent, that man has
named them "the laws of nature."
            c. For example:
                (1) The law of gravity
                (2) The laws of liquidity-Water flows to the lowest
                     point
            d. This healing happened as if it were one of those laws.
                (1) I know it is not that simple, but…
                     (a) There was no prayer or request.
                     (b) There was no expression of awareness on
                          Jesus’ part.
                     (c) It appears to have happened simply because
                          faith.
                (2) What is the LAW OF FAITH? It is that if we….

Mt 7:7 Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and
ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto
you:

                (3) Other verses say the same thing.

Mt 21:22 And all things, whatsoever ye shall ask
in prayer, believing, ye shall receive.

Mr 11:24 Therefore I say unto you, What things
soever ye desire, when ye pray, believe that ye
receive them, and ye shall have them.

John 14:14 If ye shall ask any thing in my name,
I will do it.

                (4) There is something to believing and seeking that
we have not gotten down yet.
                     (a) What? That we should be getting answers to
                          ALL of our prayers!
                     (c) Every prayer should be answered in one of
                          two ways.
                           i. We should get that for which we have
                               prayed.
ii. We should be convicted that what we
prayed for was inconsistent with the
will of God, confessed it as sin, and
                               adjusted our prayer accordingly.
                     (c) Our prayers are not supposed to be measured
                          by percentages but by certainties.
            e. What should we do?
                (1) Pray and believe more.
                (2) Pray in obedience.
                     (a) No known sin.
                     (b) Without worry and fear.
                     (c) With fervency and fasting
                (3) Pray in faith.
                (4) Pray wanting to learn.
                (5) Pray only wanting what God wants.
    B. Immediately Jesus and the woman felt something.
        1. Jesus definitely felt something.

Luke 8:46 And Jesus said, Somebody hath touched
me: for I perceive that virtue is gone out of me.

        2. And the woman must have for once Jesus started looking for
her, she did not question that she was the one being
sought. She felt the healing just as Jesus did.
        3. There is nothing wrong with having feelings when God does
            something for you!
        4. BUT then the woman was going to slip away.
        5. The Lord had other plans. Now, it was time for her
            payment.

IV. Let’s note the payment.
    A. Can you imagine what this woman might have been thinking!
        1. She must have figured that she was in terrible trouble.
        2. Her first impulse was not to say anything, to hide.
        3. But Jesus started looking around and seemed to have
            spotted her.

Mark 5:32 And he looked round about to see HER
that had done this thing.

Luke 8:47 And when the woman saw that she was
not hid…

        4. You do not want to play Hide and Seek with God!
        5. So she confessed.

Luke 8:47 …she came trembling, and falling down
before him, she declared unto him before all the
people for what cause she had touched him, and
how she was healed immediately.

    B. The payment that Jesus demanded was not cash.
        1. It was acknowledgement, praise, and maybe a little
            thankfulness.

Luke 8:47 …she declared unto him before all
the people….

        2. And when she had made payment, Jesus blessed her.

Luke 8:48 And he said unto her, Daughter, be of
good comfort: thy faith hath made thee whole; go
in peace.

        3. God did not want this woman to be in slavery to pain,
            uncleanness, isolation, or sickness.
        4. But He did not want her to receive and not share either.
        5. Is praise and gratitude too much to ask for what God has
            done in our lives?
            a. I say NO.
            b. I say that it is too little not too much!
