Mark is the fast-paced gospel. Beginning in verse 16, Mark started
recording the life and ministry of Jesus in earnest. Mark introduced
Jesus as one having authority and does so describing Jesus actions in
rapid-fire order.

I say rapid-fire because of the timing words he used.
    1. Four times in this chapter along, Mark used the word
        "straightway." \\#Mark 1:10, 18, 20, 21\\
    2. Four other times, he used the word "immediately."
        \\#Mark 1:12, 28, 31, 42\\
    3. And twice he used the word "forthwith." \\#Mark 1:29, 43\\
    4. That is 10 fast-paced words in 30 Bible verses.
    5. All four or those words imply fast-paced action.

I say order because these words also indicate that Mark is giving
them to us in chronological order. Even more, they seem to indicate
these events happened close to one another, some within a 24 hour
period.

I. \\#1:16-20\\ Jesus Had Authority over Men
    A. I spoke about these verses last week and will only repeat some
thoughts to keep the flow Mark has creating going.
    B. After John is arrested, Jesus moved His headquarters to
Capernaum, a sea-side city on the Sea of Galilee.
        1. On a certain day, Jesus walked along the pier and called
            His first four disciples.
        2. This is not when Jesus met them. This is when Jesus
            called them.
        3. Few things demonstrate authority over men any more than
            calling them into the ministry.
        4. That authority should be seen in every Christian’s life.
    C. And notice the men’s response:

Mark 1:20 And straightway he called them: and
they left their father Zebedee in the ship with
the hired servants, and went after him.

    D. Jesus had authority over men.

II. \\#1:21-22\\ Jesus Had Authority in Doctrine

Mark 1:21 And they went into Capernaum; and
straightway on the sabbath day he entered into
the synagogue, and taught.
22 And they were astonished at his doctrine: for
he taught them as one that had authority, and not
as the scribes.

    A. This happened on the Sabbath Day in a synagogue.
        1. There is no record of a synagogue in the Old Testament.
        2. They sprang up in mass during the 400 years in between the
Old and New Testaments as the Jews who did not live in
Jerusalem desired a place to be taught from God’s Word.
        3. The Jews could not offer sacrifices there, but they could
            worship and study there.
        4. They are the forerunner of the church.
    B. The synagogue format was different from most churches in that
the men were offered the opportunity to speak from the
        Scriptures.
        1. Jesus did and the people were impressed with:
            a. His doctrine
            b. His authority
        2. His doctrine:
            a. No doubt Jesus could explain the Bible like no other
                could.
            b. And why not? He wrote it.
            c. Jesus is the God who spoke the words into the Bible.
            d. The word "inspired" means "breathed out."
            e. God spoke the words into the hearts of writers,
allowed them some liberty in their expression of the
words, but oversaw every word they penned to make
certain it stated His exact meaning.
            f. Now, the One who spoke the words into the hearts of
the writers is speaking the Word into the hearts of
                the listeners.
            g. What glory that must have been!
        3. His authority:
            a. The people not only marvelled at what Jesus said but
                also how Jesus said it.
                (1) The Bible says "not like the Scribes."
                (2) They lacked what Jesus had.
            b. Strong’s defines the word "authority" as competence,
                capacity, force.
            c. I do not believe that force necessarily means volume.
                (1) Many people in the south don’t think the preacher is
preaching if he is not loud.
                (2) The truth is some preachers are the loudest when
they have the least to say.
                (3) A person can be very loud and say very little.
            d. I’m not against volume, but volume alone does not make
                for sound preaching.
        4. I believe that Jesus was:
            a. Competent:
                (1) Jesus knew what the Book from which He spoke.
                (2) Again, He wrote it and had no learning curve with
                     it.
                (3) Being strictly a human preacher, I can tell you
that we are always on a learning curve.
            b. Certain:
                (1) Jesus believed what He spoke.
                (2) If you do not believe the Bible, don’t call
yourself a preacher or even a Christian.
                (3) Sadly, many in the pulpit DO NOT BELIEVE THE
BIBLE THEY ARE SUPPOSED TO BE PREACHING FROM.
            c. Compelling:
                (1) There was a power to what Jesus said that moved
the people to respond and to respond right then.
                (2) Might God give to me and the Bible preachers of
                     this generation such authority!

III. \\#1:23-28\\ Jesus Had Authority over Demons
    A. Here Jesus’ authority becomes clearly visible to all.

Mark 1:23 And there was in their synagogue a man
with an unclean spirit; and he cried out,
24 Saying, Let us alone; what have we to do with
thee, thou Jesus of Nazareth? art thou come to
destroy us? I know thee who thou art, the Holy One
of God.

    B. This miracle appears to have happened the same day.
    C. Either as or right after Jesus had spoken, a man with an
"unclean spirit" spoke up to identify and mock Jesus.
        1. What is an unclean spirit?
            a. It is a bit hard to say.
                (1) The word "unclean" means impure, morally lewd,
                     or foul.
                (2) It is used often throughout the Old and New
Testaments to mark something or some person as
being impure and so not acceptable for God’s
                     use or fellowship.
                (3) It is used of demons around 20 times in the New
                     Testament.
                     (a) 18 of them in the gospels.
                     (b) 3 of them in this short account.
            b. Some demons cause physical afflictions when they
                possess a person.
                (1) \\#Matt 12:22\\ Demon caused one to be blind and
                     mute.
                (2) \\#Mark 9:25\\ mute and deaf spirit
                (3) The most common affection seems to have been
                     muteness, the inability to speak.
            c. It may be that every demon is an unclean spirit, but
the times an unclean spirit is specifically mentioned
in the Bible, it is typically a tormenting spirit.
                (1) The demoniac of Gadara had unclean spirits
                     within him.
                (2) The father’s son who often threw himself into the
fire and into the water had an unclean spirit.
            d. It seems that although an unclean spirit can control
the body, his primary target is to torment the mind
to the place where their hosts are crazed,
                irrational, and suicidal.
            e. I believe you can look today and see their handiwork.
                (1) On the one hand, some people have such a fearful
spirit that they will not venture out of their
homes and some will even attack you if you get
too close to them (Covid 19).
                (2) On the other hand, others are so brazen that they
will riot, loot, and kill for no reason other
than they are being driven by some force to do
                     so (George Floyd riots).
        2. This man appears to have been a regular attender of this
Jewish synagogue and was probably considered rational.
            a. That indicates that he was not too out of the
                ordinary.
            b. If he had been a blasphemer or unusually wicked in his
behavior, the Jews would most likely have put him
                out.
            c. However, on this day, the unclean spirit within him
put thoughts into his mind and words into his mouth.
    D. Jesus controlled the spirit in two ways. He told the demon to
hush up and to get out.
        1. The Hush Up Command:
            a. Jesus did not want either demons or the people He
                helped to identify Him.
            b. Three times in this chapter alone Jesus commanded
that those who knew Him best not reveal it.

Mark 1:25 And Jesus rebuked him, saying, Hold
thy peace, and come out of him.

Mark 1:34 And he healed many that were sick of
divers diseases, and cast out many devils; and
suffered not the devils to speak, because they
knew him.

Mark 1:44 And saith unto him, See thou say
nothing to any man: but go thy way, shew thyself
to the priest, and offer for thy cleansing those
things which Moses commanded, for a testimony
unto them.

            c. The Bible never tells us why.
                (1) Since Jesus also hushed the people He healed, as
well as the demons He cast out, I don’t think it
was because He did not want demon’s identifying
                     Him.
                (2) It would appear that Jesus wanted a "factless"
faith instead of the evidences of personal
testimonies and healings, at least at the
                     beginning of His ministry.
                (3) I cannot say.
                     (a) Some believe that Jesus did not want His
fame to rise too quickly, believing it
would put Him on the religious leaders’
                          radar too soon.
                     (b) Seeing that Jesus’ fame spread like wildfire
anyway, I would say that was not it.

Mark 1:28 And immediately his fame spread abroad
throughout all the region round about Galilee.

Mark 1:33 And all the city was gathered together
at the door.

Mark 1:45 But he went out, and began to publish
it much, and to blaze abroad the matter, insomuch
that Jesus could no more openly enter into the
city, but was without in desert places: and they
came to him from every quarter.

                     (c) My only guess is that Jesus wanted to let
the people who would believe without any
outward evidences have an opportunity to
                          earn a greater reward.
                           i. I don’t believe there is anything wrong
with using evidence to find Jesus.
ii. However, I do believe there is a
blessedness that comes to those who
simply listen to the Holy Ghost and
                               follow.
        2. The Get Out Command:
            a. It is obvious that the demon did not like it…

Mark 1:26 And when the unclean spirit had torn
him, and cried with a loud voice, he came out of
him.

            b. But he had no choice but to obey.
                (1) Jesus was showing that He was master even over
                     the enemies of God.
                (2) God-haters, Christian persecutors, demons—even
the devil himself—will bow before Him and must
                     obey Him.
                (3) Jesus is not just Lord over lords or King over
kings, He is God over all!
            c. And I say let every knee bow and every tongue confess
                TODAY!
                (1) Every knee and tongue shall; but in that day, it
                     will do them no good.
                (2) In a world literally hiding for fear and burning
with hatred, we need the Lord Jesus Christ and
                     His authority.

In my small mind, I wish we had or I knew how to use the power to
cast demons. It seems to me as though we need to be able to identify
them, hush them, and get them out; but that is apparently not a power
available to me. However, prayer and repentance is.

2Chron 7:14 If my people, which are called by my
name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek
my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then
will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their
sin, and will heal their land.
