We continue looking at the life and ministry of God-man, Jesus, the
Savior of the world. It is obvious to me that Mark has a goal in the
selecting the first miracles of Jesus. He wanted to show Jesus’
authority. From verse 16 to verse 28, Mark demented Jesus’
authority:
    1. …over men.
    2. …in doctrine.
    3. …over demons.

In the verses we look at tonight, Mark will continue doing that. That
Jesus had such authority does not amaze me in the least. It is not
surprising to me that Mark had a theme, that the theme is Jesus’
authority, or that he found plenty of material to demonstrate that
theme. What is surprising is that he found so much material one-
right-after-the other of the other. Mark appears to be recording
miracles that took place the same day and at the same time.

Can you image what a ride it would have been to follow Jesus for just
one day? I know there were many good and godly people who came to
Jesus, but there were also a lot of sick, possessed, demented, and
perverted that Jesus came into contact with every hour! Thank God
that we have a Savior with the authority to fix whatever ails us!

But let’s continue looking at Mark’s main though through here;
namely, Jesus Is Master.

I. \\#29-34\\ Jesus Has Authority over Sickness
    A. In verse 23, Jesus was in the synagogue of Capernaum on the
        Sabbath Day.
        1. Jesus preached and then cast out a demon.
        2. We may have several firsts taking place here. I don’t
just mean in the book of Mark, but in the ministry of
            Jesus.
            a. This may be the first time Jesus did a miracle on the
                Sabbath Day.
            b. This may also be the first time Jesus cast a demon out
                of a person.
            c. And in our text, Jesus healing Peter’s mother-in-law
may be the first time Jesus healed an individual.
        3. Let’s go back to that first first, i.e. this may have been
the first miracle that Jesus performed on the Sabbath Day.
            a. This miracle on the Sabbath did not appear to cause
                much of a ruckus.
            b. Later \\#Luke 13:11\\, it will.
                (1) Jesus will heal a woman who had had a "spirit of
infirmity" for 18 years on the Sabbath Day.
                (2) At that time, He will be accused of breaking the
                     Law.
                (c) However, this is much earlier and in Capernaum, a
city with Jesus but it also has Gentiles and far
fewer scribes and Pharisees living within it.
    B. In verse 29. Jesus left the synagogue and entered the private
        home of Simon and Andrew.
        1. Simon is Peter. Andrew was Peter’s brother.
        2. Both Matthew \\#Mt 8:14\\ and Luke \\#Lk 4:38\\ record
this event, but neither of them give us a detail that
            Mark included.
            a. Matthew and Mark called the house Peter’s.
            b. Mark tells us that it is Peter and Andrew’s.
        3. There is no doubt that it was Peter’s house.
            a. Peter has both a wife and a mother-in-law living
                inside of it.
            b. Those furnishings pretty well mark the house as
                belonging to Peter.
        4. However, Mark is telling us that Andrew lived there too.
            a. Is that a major truth? No, but it is another of those
interesting details that I like to see.
            b. It also indicates that Andrew was single, probably
younger than Peter, and that Peter and Andrew’s
                parents may have died.
        5. But the miracle is that Peter’s mother-in-law was very
            sick.
            a. Jesus healed her.
            b. Since Jesus lifted her UP, she must have been DOWN
                with the fever.
    C. That is a good miracle, but compared to some of the others
Jesus performed, it was not the most spectacular. What makes
this miracle so important? Two things:
        1. Peter’s mother-in-law may have been the first person that
            Jesus healed.
            a. It is hard to know for certain—especially since not
all of the works that Jesus did are recorded—but
                many think it was.
            b. Are these important details? No. I just find them
                interesting.
        2. \\#33-34\\ These two events caused the fame of Jesus to
            spread.
            a. By evening, all of the city came to be healed and
                helped.
            b. I don’t know how the word spread so quickly, but it
                did.
            c. And even while the word was spreading,
                (1) \\#38\\ Jesus told the demons to hush.
                (2) \\#44\\ Jesus told some healed to keep hushed.
        3. Question - Why do we not have healing like that today?
            a. We still have healings, but not like this.
                (1) Would it not be great if we could have a real
                     city-wide healing crusade?
                (2) Wouldn’t it be marvelous if we could walk though
a hospital and heal every sick person in it?
            b. Why can’t we?
                (1) I don’t know, but it may be something along the
lines of why Jesus was telling these people to
                     keep quiet.
                (2) Perhaps Jesus wants people to believe not because
of what they see or hear, but because of what
the still small voice of the Holy Ghost says and
because of what the powerful voice of faith
                     reveals.
    D. \\#35-39\\ Seem to change the time and location of Mark’s
        record.

Mark 1:35 And in the morning, rising up a great
while before day, he went out, and departed into
a solitary place, and there prayed.
36 And Simon and they that were with him
followed after him.
37 And when they had found him, they said unto
him, All men seek for thee.
38 And he said unto them, Let us go into the
next towns, that I may preach there also: for
therefore came I forth.
39 And he preached in their synagogues
throughout all Galilee, and cast out devils.

        1. Everything from \\#16-37\\ seems to take place in
Capernaum and much of it within 24 hours.
        2. \\#38-39\\ make it clear that Jesus left Capernaum and
began going to other cities, preaching and healing in
            them as well.
        3. We do not get another location reference until Jesus is
returning to Capernaum in \\#Mark 2:1\\.

II. \\#40-45\\ Jesus Had Authority Over Disease

Mark 1:40 And there came a leper to him,
beseeching him, and kneeling down to him, and
saying unto him, If thou wilt, thou canst make
me clean.
41 And Jesus, moved with compassion, put forth
his hand, and touched him, and saith unto him, I
will; be thou clean.
42 And as soon as he had spoken, immediately the
leprosy departed from him, and he was cleansed.
43 And he straitly charged him, and forthwith
sent him away;
44 And saith unto him, See thou say nothing to
any man: but go thy way, shew thyself to the
priest, and offer for thy cleansing those things
which Moses commanded, for a testimony unto them.
45 But he went out, and began to publish it
much, and to blaze abroad the matter, insomuch
that Jesus could no more openly enter into the
city, but was without in desert places: and they
came to him from every quarter.

    A. Perhaps there is only a minor distinction in a sickness and a
disease, but I believe it is worth mentioning.
        1. Our bodies can usually normally heal themselves of a
            sickness.
            a. Not always, but most of the time.
            b. fevers, colds, the flu, viruses
        2. But the human body needs help to defeat a disease: cancer,
            heart disease, Tuberculosis, leprosy
        3. Sadly, so many are using the medicines for diseases to
treat their sicknesses that by the time they actually get
a disease, the medicine won’t help them.
        4. This man was not just sick.
            a. He had a disease, leprosy.
            b. And there was no cure for it.
            c. The best they could do in that day was to quarantine
                the sick.
            d. Notice how that works: When there is a disease making
the rounds, you quarantine the sick—not the healthy.
    B. I love this story.
        1. It is told in Matthew \\#Mt 8:1\\ and Luke
            \\#Luke 5:12\\.
        2. Jesus healed more than one leper but what makes this
account so unique was the conversation that all three of
the gospel writers who recorded it said took place.
            a. \\#40\\ You see the leper’s faith in his words:

Mark 1:40 …If thou wilt, thou canst make me
clean.

            b. \\#41\\ You see the Savior’s compassion in His words:

Mark 1:41 … I will; be thou clean.

        3. In essence, what the leper said was, "If you want to and
care enough, I know you can heal me."
        4. In essence, what Jesus said was, "I do care and I want to,
            be healed."
        5. This is a hint into the second major detail that Mark will
            tell us about Jesus.
            a. John’s first major detail about Jesus was that He was
the eternal God who spoke all things into existence.
            b. Luke’s first major detail about Jesus was that He had
a miraculously conceived forerunner in John the
                Baptist.
            c. Matthews first major detail about Jesus was that He
was the promised Son of David.
            d. But Mark’s first major detail about Jesus was He had
                authority.
            e. Mark’s second major detail about Jesus will be that He
                cared.
    C. However, this miracle is not just demonstrating the power that
Jesus had over disease but also over sin.
        1. Leprosy is a type of sin.
            a. I talk about types a good bit when I talk about the
                Bible.
            b. The reason why is because God does not always come
straight out and tell us what He wants us to know.
            c. Sometime He hides the information in symbols,
                pictures, and types.
                (1) Someone recently asked if I could write down all
the Bible verses in a Bible book that talked
                      about the end times.
                (2) That is not easy to do because they are not
                     always obvious.
        2. What does leprosy tell us about sin?
            a. Leprosy like sin starts small and spreads.
            b. Leprosy like sin starts on the inside and moves to the
                outside.
            c. Leprosy like sin isolates us.
            d. Leprosy like sin kills.
            e. Leprosy like sin could only be healed by Jesus.
                (1) In the Old Testament, both Miriam and Naaman by
                     God.
                (2) In the New Testament, God came to earth and
                     healed in Person.
