E. \\#3:31-35\\ The Relationship Between Jesus and His Family
Mark chapter 3 is the "Change Chapter." Mark is showing us how the
life and ministry of Jesus changed. In \\#3:1-6\\, the relationship
between the Pharisees and Jesus changed, including the scribes as
well. I do not know what bonded these two groups together but the
bond was strong. I do not know of a time in the Scripture when they
did not work in unison together. Although \\#6\\ says the Pharisees
went forth to counsel how they might destroy Jesus, it is the Scribes
that make the first attack.
I. \\#3:22-30\\ The Relationship Between Jesus and the Scribes
A. \\#22\\ Jesus was not in Jerusalem.
Mark 3:22 And the scribes which came down from
Jerusalem said….
1. \\#Mark 3:7\\ was the last record we have of where Jesus
was.
Mark 3:7 But Jesus withdrew himself with his
disciples to the sea….
a. From both Matthew and Mark’s record, we can see that
Jesus was around Capernaum, but He sailed from that
area of Galilee.
b. The only body of water on which you can sail in that
area is the Sea of Galilee.
c. The Sea of Galilee is only 13 miles long by 8 miles
wide so He did not go far, certainly not to
Jerusalem.
2. So the Scribes and Pharisees have not been waiting for
Jesus to come to Jerusalem.
a. They have been following and maybe even traveling with
Jesus to hear what He had to say.
b. They began their attacks while doing the same.
B. The first attack was not physical. It was verbal.
Mark 3:22 …He hath Beelzebub, and by the prince
of the devils casteth he out devils.
1. The first attack was an attack against Jesus’ character.
2. They accused Jesus of being of the devil.
a. However, the name they used for the devil was a crude
name.
b. It is a reference to the "god of the flies."
c. If you have ever been on a dairy or a farm or even
around a lot of animals, you know what flies like to
stay near.
C. Note some truths about ALL verbal attacks.
1. A verbal attack is a REAL attack.
a. Verbal attacks are most often an enemy’s first attack.
(1) Most people cannot help but to show their heart
through the lips.
(2) Jesus said as much.
Matthew 12:34 O generation of vipers, how can
ye, being evil, speak good things? for out of the
abundance of the heart the mouth speaketh.
(3) I find myself warning you from time to time that
my preaching is often tainted with what is on my
mind and heart.
(a) If it is on my mind it will probably come
out of my mouth.
(b) That is one reason I prepare a good bit
before I preach. It helps keep me from
saying things that I have not finished
thinking through yet.
(4) I suppose it is a good thing that most people
will attack us verbally BEFORE they attack us
physically.
(5) At least it gives us an opportunity to know who
our enemies are so we can be better prepared.
b. Verbal attacks are easy attacks.
(1) Anyone can run their mouth and most of us do.
(2) James gave Christians several warnings and
commands concerning our mouths:
James 1:19 Wherefore, my beloved brethren, let
every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow
to wrath:
James 1:26 If any man among you seem to be
religious, and bridleth not his tongue, but
deceiveth his own heart, this man’s religion is
vain.
(3) Because verbal attacks come so easily, they are
often the attack of cowards, Not always, but
sometimes.
c. Verbal attacks can hurt, both the heart and the
reputation, of their victims.
Proverbs 12:18 There is that speaketh like the
piercings of a sword: but the tongue of the wise
is health.
Pro 18:8 The words of a talebearer are as
wounds, and they go down into the innermost
parts of the belly.
2. A verbal attack does not have to be a false to be a verbal
attack.
a. Too many think it is all right to say thing because
it is true.
(1) It is not.
(2) The Bible condemns some kinds of speech that may
be true but is still wrong: gossip, talebearing,
busybody.
1 Timothy 5:13 And withal they learn to be idle,
wandering about from house to house; and not only
idle, but tattlers also and busybodies, speaking
things which they ought not.
1 Peter 4:15 But let none of you suffer as a
murderer, or as a thief, or as an evildoer,
or as a busybody in other men’s matters.
(3) A good rule of thumb is to make sure our speech
is kind, needed, and helpful.
(4) How easy it is to use words that hurt and destroy
and how impossible it is to take those words
back.
(5) I saw meme, "Words can be forgiven but they
cannot be forgotten."
b. By the way, it does not matter whether you are
speaking words in someone’s ear or typing them on
someone’s Twitter or Facebook page, it is still
wrong.
D. But then notice some truths about verbally attacking Jesus.
1. \\#23-26\\ Jesus is smarter than you are.
Mark 3:23 And he called them unto him, and said
unto them in parables, How can Satan cast out
Satan?
24 And if a kingdom be divided against itself,
that kingdom cannot stand.
25 And if a house be divided against itself,
that house cannot stand.
26 And if Satan rise up against himself, and be
divided, he cannot stand, but hath an end.
a. Jesus does not give railing for railing or insult for
insult.
b. He just told the truth, namely, Satan can’t get ahead
by attacking himself.
c. That is not deep theology, but it is truth.
d. That is why sooner rather than later, all of the
different false religions, all of the different
political voices, and all of the different financial
interests will come together with one voice.
e. In the beginning, all of the different voices and
forces of the devil seemed to be pulling people
a part; but when things get bad enough, the book of
Revelation makes it clear that they will all come
together.
f. We are seeing that in America today.
(1) We might not be able to agree on much but most
are agreed:
(a) That businesses are more important than
worship.
(b) That safety is more important than the
Constitution.
(c) That "feelings" are more important than
being laws, logic, the Bible or anything
else.
(2) This is just the beginning. They will agree
together that:
(a) Christianity is hateful.
(b) The Bible is dangerous.
(c) The world needs a single ruler.
(d) And that the anti-Christ is god.
2. \\#27\\ Jesus is stronger than the devil.
Mark 3:27 No man can enter into a strong man’s
house, and spoil his goods, except he will first
bind the strong man; and then he will spoil his
house.
a. Jesus was saying that He was not working with the
devil. He is just stronger than the devil.
b. The devil did not want Jesus to be walking the earth,
preaching the gospel, revealing Himself, helping the
hurting.
c. He just couldn’t do anything about it.
3. \\#28-29\\ Jesus won’t forgive slander of the Spirit.
Mark 3:28 Verily I say unto you, All sins shall
be forgiven unto the sons of men, and
blasphemies wherewith soever they shall
blaspheme:
29 But he that shall blaspheme against the Holy
Ghost hath never forgiveness, but is in danger of
eternal damnation:
a. The thought that there are things that God will not
forgive frightens me, but this verse is telling us
something God will not forgive.
b. God will not forgive those who blaspheme the Holy
Ghost.
(1) Remember, Jesus was not doing the works that He
did in His own power.
(2) Jesus laid aside His power when He came to the
earth.
(3) Everything He did, He did in the power of the
Holy Ghost.
John 3:34 For he whom God hath sent speaketh the
words of God: for God giveth not the Spirit by
measure unto him.
(4) Why do it that way?
(a) I don’t know, but I suspect it was that
Jesus wanted to fight the devil, sin, and
temptation in the same ball park you and I
fight him.
(b) You and I do not have the power that God
has, but we do have the Holy Ghost inside
of us, just like Jesus did.
(c) If Jesus defeated the devil with the Holy
Ghost, we can too.
(5) So when the scribes called the power behind
Jesus’ miracles demonic, they were virtually
saying that the Holy Ghost was the devil.
c. God does not explain why He will not forgive blasphemy
against the Holy Ghost.
(1) He just says that is a line that once crosses,
one cannot return.
(2) It may be because the only way God reaches and
deals with is through the Holy Ghost.
(3) If we are blaspheming Him, there is no way us to
draw us to the fountain of forgiveness.
(4) But regardless of why it is true, it is true.
E. So Jesus’ relationship with the scribes has changed. They are
attacking Him now.
II. \\#3:31-35\\ The Relationship Between Jesus and His Family
Mark 3:31 There came then his brethren and his
mother, and, standing without, sent unto him,
calling him.
32 And the multitude sat about him, and they
said unto him, Behold, thy mother and thy
brethren without seek for thee.
33 And he answered them, saying, Who is my
mother, or my brethren?
34 And he looked round about on them which sat
about him, and said, Behold my mother and my
brethren!
35 For whosoever shall do the will of God, the
same is my brother, and my sister, and mother.
A. Because of time, let’s just say Jesus’ relationship with His
family has been greatly enlarged to include all that will do
the will of God.
B. And what is the will of God? That we believe on the Son, and
turn from our sins.
C. A shorter way of saying it is to say, "To include those what
will be saved."
