I have an older brother and about this time every year, I got his
"hand-me-downs." Because he was older than me, often I would have to
grow into my cloths. In this chapter, we will see the disciples
grow into their name.

Last week, we did an overview of the entire chapter by looking at the
opportunities offered:
    1. \\#Mark 6:1-6\\ Nazareth’s Refused Opportunity
    2. \\#Mark 6:14-20\\ Herod’s Refused Opportunity
    3. \\#Mark 6:7-13\\ The Disciples Accepted Opportunity

The disciples were the only ones to take advantage of the
opportunities afforded to them. They took advantage of several
opportunities. I’ll start off mentioning two:
    1. The opportunity to be saved.
    2. The opportunity to be a disciples.
        a. A disciple is a learner.
        b. In my opinion, every Christian should be a disciple; but
if what I see in life is true, that is not the case.

But there was another opportunity that I mentioned last week that I
want to mention a bit more today. Notice our text then I will share
two main thoughts:

Mark 6:7 And he called unto him the twelve,
and began to send them forth by two and two;
and gave them power over unclean spirits;

I. The Promotion
    A. Notice in verse 7, who it was that Jesus sent out, the Twelve.
        1. Just to make sure you are aware of what is going on, Jesus
has summoned His disciples together to send them out one
of the first evangelistic crusades ever.
        2. But who has He called?
            a. The text says "the twelve."
            b. But the twelve what?
            c. I know it’s twelve people, but what I want to know is
                what are they called.
    B. Obviously, Mark didn’t tell us, but Matthew did.

Matt 10:1 And when he had called unto him his
twelve disciples, he gave them power against
unclean spirits, to cast them out, and to heal
all manner of sickness and all manner of disease.

    C. While Mark does not tell us
        1. Matthew specifically says Jesus called to Him and then
            sent out the twelve DISCIPLES.
        2. Remember, a disciple is a learner, a student.
        3. That is what everyone that has been hanging with Jesus has
been called so far, a disciple.
    D. However, Mark does tell us what Jesus got back AFTER the
disciples had completed the first evangelistic crusade.

Mark 6:30 And the apostles gathered themselves
together unto Jesus, and told him all things,
both what they had done, and what they had
taught.

         1. That is interesting.
         2. Matthew said Jesus called and sent 12 disciples, but
Mark said when they returned that Jesus had 12
             apostles.
    E. Of course we know these men did not miraculously change from
disciples to apostles in the matter of a few days, but this
title change means the disciples are growing in maturity.
        1. Disciple means student, learner.
        2. Apostle means "sent one."
        3. Using terms that I have used before, these men are
growing from being the sheep to being the shepherd.
        4. By going on this first trip, the disciples when from
being the twelve that are always hanging around Jesus to
being the ones that Jesus SENT on a evangelistic
            crusade.
    F. It is a long step from being a disciple to being a "sent
one," and not every Christian makes it.
        1. Jesus has been training them for at least 1 1/2 years now
            and maybe longer.
        2. And of course, some of their most difficult training was
            yet ahead, namely the cross.
        3. But even now, Jesus was training His disciples and
            growing them into apostles.
        4. These men probably thought Jesus was sending them to help
others (and he was), but they were also going to help
            themselves.
        5. All though this chapter, Jesus was exposing them to
            lessons they needed to learn.

II. Their Lessons
    A. What kind of lessons?
    B. The narrative gives us enough information to see some.
        1. They learned the faith lesson.

Mark 6:7 And he called unto him the twelve, and
began to send them forth by two and two; and gave
them power over unclean spirits;
8 And commanded them that they should take
nothing for their journey, save a staff only; no
scrip, no bread, no money in their purse:
9 But be shod with sandals; and not put on two
coats.

            a. Jesus was sending these men out with nothing but Him.
                (1) Not only did Jesus NOT give them provision, He
told them not to take it if they had it.
                (2) Jesus was saying, "Don’t take anything!"
                (3) Jesus was insisting that they live by faith and
lean on Him while they were gone.
            b. There is no doubt that faith is important.

Heb 11:6 But without faith it is impossible to
please him: for he that cometh to God must
believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of
them that diligently seek him.

2Co 1:24 …for by faith ye stand.

            c. Now, I am having a hard time saying what I am about to
                say.
                (1) Based on the Bible, I would say there is only one
kind of faith; that if you have faith, you have
it; and that if you don’t have faith, you don’t.
                (2) However, based on what people tell me, it seems
that there must be different levels of faith.
                (3) Why? Because some people assure me that they are
saved but if they are, their faith has not been
                     strong enough to grow them.
            d. So for the of them, I will concede—at least right
now—that there are different levels of faith.
                (1) We will say that saving faith is the first level.
                     (a) It is for certain, everything spiritual
                          starts there.
                     (b) What might the second level of faith be.
                (2) Well, according to what I see, I would have to
                     say it is obedient faith.
                     (a) Again, I am not sure that this exists, but
for the sake of those who say they are
saved but do not obey, I will say that if
it is possible, you need to get some
                          obedient faith.
                     (b) That is what these disciple had.
                     (c) Jesus sent them, and they went.
                     (d) Are there other levels?
                           i. According to the way people who claim
                               Christ live, there must be.
                          ii. What is it?
                (3) According to the way some who claim Christ live,
there must be a faithful to the end, confident,
                     happy faith.
                     (a) These disciples not only went, but they
                          happily—and they returned.
                     (b) They completed their task.
                     (c) So when they returned to Jesus, Jesus did
not just refer to them as "students" any
more. Now they were "sent ones" because
                          they had been sent.
            e. So Jesus had the disciples learn about faith on this
                trip.
                (1) But don’t let those levels confuse you.
                (2) Jesus said, "If you have the faith of the grain
of a mustard seed, you can say to the mountain,
"Be removed and cast into the sea;" and it will
                     obey you.
                (3) I’d say that is the highest lever of faith.
                (4) But a mustard seed is not much at all.
                (5) So no matter what level of faith you need, it
                     can’t be more than that!
            f. Notice one more thing about faith.
                (1) The faith Jesus was requiring of the disciples
did not help those to whom they were preaching.
                (2) My faith does not help you, maybe it challenges
you some. I hope so, but my faith does not get
                     you anything.
                (3) Jesus was having the disciple learn a faith
lesson FOR THEM not for their listeners.
                (4) And thus it always is with Christian.
                     (a) Your faith is for you.
                     (b) If we are going to be "sent ones," we are
going to have to have faith.
        2. They learned the stay-put lesson.

Mark 6:10 And he said unto them, In what place
soever ye enter into an house, there abide till
ye depart from that place.

            a. Jesus specifically told the disciples to stay where
they first landed in the village they were going to,
not to be moving from house to house.
            b. The Bible does not explain why Jesus told His
disciples that, but I think it might have been so
that it did not look like they were looking for a
                better place to roost.
                (1) No one would have known the disciples or their
message when they first came to a town or
village, so no one would be showing to them or
                     expecting from them any favors.
                (2) If someone let them stay with them, it would have
been because they had a good heart and were
willing to share whatever they might have—large
                     or small.
                (3) But in time, when people found out more about
them—and especially saw the powers that they
had—I imagine a lot of people extended an
invitation for them to come stay with them—
people of power, of influence, of wealth.
                (4) To serve Jesus has never been a matter of
                     getting but of giving.
                (5) Jesus did not want the gospel to go to the
highest bidder but to any who had a willing
                     heart.
            c. This is still an important lesson that needs to be
                learned.
                (1) By bouncing church members (Tigger)
                (2) By rotating pastors and ministers
                (3) By mates in marriage
                (4) And I’d like to say by employees and employers
        3. They learned the unfriendly lesson.

Mark 6:11 And whosoever shall not receive you,
nor hear you, when ye depart thence, shake off
the dust under your feet for a testimony against
them. Verily I say unto you, It shall be more
tolerable for Sodom and Gomorrha in the day of
judgment, than for that city.

            a. Not everyone is going to be friendly.
            b. Sad but true; however, that is all right.
            c. Those who choose to be unfriendly to Jesus’ sent ones
will have to face the God whose ambassadors they
rejected, and there will always be another place for
                the sent ones to go—always.
        4. They learned "be flexible" lesson.

Mark 6:35 And when the day was now far spent,
his disciples came unto him, and said, This is a
desert place, and now the time is far passed:

            a. They didn’t sound too chipper, did they?
            b. Well, it was their vacation that was being crashed.
            c. Every "sent one" will learn sooner or later that the
best and the most important plans have to be
                flexible.
        5. They learned the "unrealized power of God" lesson.

Mark 6:37 He answered and said unto them, Give
ye them to eat. And they say unto him, Shall we
go and buy two hundred pennyworth of bread, and
give them to eat?

            a. At some point, we need to realize and remember that
Jesus never asks a question for information and never
makes a statement without a purpose.
            b. Why did Jesus tell the "sent ones" to feed the crowd
when He knew they could not.
                (1) He knew they had no money.
                (2) He knew even if they did, there was no place near
                     to purchase food.
                (3) Why did He tell them to do what He knew they
                     could not do?
            c. He wanted them to know where the power would always
                come from.
                (1) "Sent ones" can’t feed the multitudes.
                (2) "Sent ones" can’t heal the sick.
                (3) "Sent ones" can’t opened the eyes of the blind.
                (4) "Sent ones" can’t do miracles.
                (5) But "sent ones" know the One who can.
                (6) The weight of that command caused the apostles to
pay attention like they had not paid attention
                     in a long while.
                     (a) It is hard to believe you could ever get
used to the miracles, isn’t it?
                     (b) But I suppose you can.
                     (c) They needed to see again where the power of
                          God really lay.
                     (d) It wasn’t in them and it isn’t in us.
        6. Thoughout the entire section, they learned the "Go"
            lesson.
            a. Remember what the word "apostle" means, sent one.
            b. That is past tense, meaning you went somewhere that
                Jesus sent you.
            c. You can’t do that unless you GO.
            d. The most important lesson in learning into the name
                apostle is to GO.

These men needed to learn into their name. We do too.
