I. \\#23:1-3, 6-8\\ Beware Gluttony
    A. \\#23:1-3\\ Gluttony at the ruler’s table.
        1. \\#1\\ The topic here is gluttony but with an added
            dimension of gluttony before ruler.
        2. \\#2\\ The picture is that it is better to cut your throat
than to overeat. The question is why?
        3. \\#3\\ The answer seems to be because the rich and
powerful might use their affluent lifestyle to deceive
            and control the common person.
            a. "dainties" means "savory meats," which is meat
                marinated in herbs.
            b. The command is to let your desire for these foods
                weaken your character.
    B. \\#23:6-8\\ Gluttony at the evil’s table.
        1. \\#6\\ The same basic command as was given before the
            ruler \\#4\\.
            a. This man has an "evil eye." The idea is that his view
                of life is evil.
            b. Do not desire his "dainty meats."
        2. \\#7\\ The motives of the evil-hearted are given.
            a. The word for "think" means "to calculate." The evil-
hearted man is always trying to figure a way to get
                ahead.
            b. He pretends to be a friend but his heart (motives) are
                with not you.
        3. \\#8\\ Eating his food will make your sick at your
            stomach.
    C. \\#23:20-21\\ Gluttony and the drunkard
        1. \\#20\\ The advice from father to son is do make friends
with drinkers and those unbridled meat eaters.
        2. \\#21\\ Why?
            a. Because both the drunkard and the glutton will end in
                poverty.
            b. Their lazy ways will leave them in rags.

II. \\#23:4-5\\ Do not work for money alone.
     A. \\#4\\ This is our wisdom but it is false truth.
     B. \\#5\\ You are putting your eyes on things that will not
last, like a bird that flies away.

Proverbs 11:24 There is that scattereth, and yet
increaseth; and there is that withholdeth more
than is meet, but it tendeth to poverty.

Proverbs 11:28 He that trusteth in his riches
shall fall: but the righteous shall flourish as
a branch.

Proverbs 13:7 There is that maketh himself rich,
yet hath nothing: there is that maketh himself
poor, yet hath great riches.

III. \\#23:9\\ Do not correct a fool. \\#Pro 9:7-8\\

Pro 9:7 He that reproveth a scorner getteth to
himself shame: and he that rebuketh a wicked man
getteth himself a blot.
8 Reprove not a scorner, lest he hate thee:
rebuke a wise man, and he will love thee.

IV. \\#23:10-11\\ Do not steal land. \\#Pro 22:28\\
V. \\#23:12-16\\ Discipline your children
    A. \\#12, 15, 16\\ Listen to me. It will bring joy to me.
    B. \\#13-14\\ Discipline your child.
        1. Do not withhold correction.
            a. This does not mean the only correction is spanking.
            b. Spanking is one tool.
            c. Spanking is not the first tool.
            d. The whole book of Proverbs consists of a father
                speaking to teaching) his son.
        2. If you do spank him, he will not die.
            a. The terms used in our Bible make the discipline sound
                deadly.
            b. The word BEAT is a harsh word.
            c. Rod can be any offshoot of a tree. It is a switch.
            d. The fact that the writer tells us the child will not
die tells us the intent is not to slay.
            e. The point in this command is to temper your love for
your child with disciple. We might reverse it to say
your discipline should also be tempered with love.
            f. The goal is to overcome the naturally rebellious
nature of the child so he will not be eternally lost.

Proverbs 19:18 Chasten thy son while there is
hope, and let not thy soul spare for his crying.

Proverbs 22:6 Train up a child in the way he
should go: and when he is old, he will not depart
from it.

Proverbs 22:15 Foolishness is bound in the heart
of a child; but the rod of correction shall drive
it far from him.

VI. \\#23:17-18\\ Do not envy the sinners.
    A. Do not envy the sinners but walk in the fear of the Lord.
    B. Why?
        1. Because there is an end, a judgment.
        2. Because what you desire will be judged.

VIII. \\#23:19, 22-25\\ Listen
    A. \\#19\\ Listen and be wise.
    B. \\#22\\ Do not despise your mother. For some reason, sons
tend to reject the loving words of their mother even if they
follow the stern words of their father.

Proverbs 10:1 The proverbs of Solomon. A wise
son maketh a glad father: but a foolish son is
the heaviness of his mother.

Proverbs 15:20 A wise son maketh a glad father:
but a foolish man despiseth his mother.

Proverbs 17:25 A foolish son is a grief to his
father, and bitterness to her that bare him.

Proverbs 19:26 He that wasteth his father, and
chaseth away his mother, is a son that causeth
shame, and bringeth reproach.

    C. \\#23\\ Get truth, wisdom, instruction, and understanding.
    D. \\#24-25\\ If you do this, both of your parents will rejoice.

IX. \\#23:26-28\\ Stay away from the strange woman.
    A. \\#26\\ Listen to my words AND follow my example.
    B. \\#27\\ The immoral woman is deep ditch and narrow pit, both
        are hindrances, traps, and dangers.
    C. \\#28\\ The immoral woman is a predator.
    D. \\#29\\ The immoral woman increases sin among men. (Of course
men should have better self-control but that does not excuse
the acts of the immoral woman.)

X. \\#23:29-35\\ Stay away from strong drink.
    A. \\#29\\ The symptoms of someone who drinks.
    B. \\#30\\ The cause - tarrying too long and seeking "mixed" (as
in mixed for the purpose of making it stronger) wine.
    C. \\#31\\ The description (which I take to describe fermented
        wine):
        1. Red in color.
        2. "giveth his colour" - stains (?), sparkles
        3. "moves itself alright" - evenly, some say it goes down
            easier after being mixed.
    D. \\#32\\ The end - It kills like a deadly snake.
    E. \\#33\\ It impairs:
        1. It makes you more susceptible to immorality.
        2. It makes you more susceptible to perverse language.
    F. \\#34-35\\ The feeling
        1. It makes you feel "sea sick."
        2. It makes you sick at your stomach without being sick.
        3. It makes you feel like you have been beaten.
        4. Strangest of all, it makes you desire it again.
