This chapter is still giving us the larger lessons of truth but it
becomes more like the latter chapters in that there are several,
unrelated truths discussed and the discussions are shorter.
\\#1:10-9:18\\ - Lengthy lessons (proverbs) (A Father’s Exhortations)
V. \\#Pro 4:1-9:18\\ Various Exhortations
A. \\#6:1-5\\ Don’t Co-sign for A Friend
1. \\#1\\
a. IF - This is a IF/THEN situation.
b. If you "surety" - pledged or the down payment
c. If you have "stricken thy hand" - The word means to
strike, clap, or hit. It appears their custom was not
to shake hands to seal an agreement but to strike
hands. (An earlier version of high-five).
d. Both of these terms deal with entering into a
financial agreement to back someone else, "friend"
or "a stranger."
2. \\#2\\ If you have done this, you are trapped (snared),
helpless like an animal, by your own words.
3. \\#3\\ If you have done this, go to your friend, humble
yourself, and(ask to be released. This is the only way
to keep your friendship (i.e. "make sure thy friend").
4. \\#4\\ Don’t sleep until you accomplish this.
5. \\#5\\ Get out of this trap as diligently as an animal
would escape from a hunter.
6. The New Testament gives us more insight into money and
lending it to family, friends, or strangers.
a. The idea is never lend, give.
Matthew 5:42 Give to him that asketh thee, and
from him that would borrow of thee turn not thou
away.
Luke 6:35 But love ye your enemies, and do good,
and lend, hoping for nothing again; and your
reward shall be great, and ye shall be the
children of the Highest: for he is kind unto the
unthankful and to the evil.
b. If you do not have it to give, don’t.
Romans 13:8 Owe no man any thing, but to love
one another: for he that loveth another hath
fulfilled the law.
B. \\#6:6-11\\ Don’t be lazy.
1. \\#6\\
a. Study the ant.
b. "Sluggard" - One who will not move.
2. \\#7\\ Even though she does not have anyone to tell him
what to do.
3. \\#8\\ She provides for herself in the summer and stores
food in the fall.
a. In other words, the ant works.
b. The work ethic is taught throughout the Bible.
4. \\#9\\ How long will you be lazy? Again, the purpose is
to get the youth to think, not to solicit an answer.
5. \\#10\\ The emphasis is on the word "LITTLE." It is used
three times. The mindset of the lazy person is not "I
never will," but "I will do it in a LITTLE while." Soon,
several "little whiles" have added up to a lifetime.
6. \\#11\\ The end is a person who, whether they wanted it to
happen or not, has wasted their potential and come to
poverty.
C. \\#6:12-19\\ Know the Sure End of the Wicked
1. \\#12-15\\ The Body Language of the Wicked - A science of
body language has developed over the last half-century.
Body language studies attempt to show a relationship
between what we think and the unconscious actions of our
body. To this, the Bible agrees.
a. \\#12\\ A "naughty" person is a son of Belial and
defined further in this verse as a wicked person. The
use of the word seems to stretch from useless or
worthless to one who purposes to work against God.
b. \\#12\\ He has a "forward" mouth, that is a crooked,
untrustworthy mouth.
c. \\#13\\ He gives wicked guidance by "winking" with his
eyes.
d. \\#13\\ He encourages wickedness by gesturing with his
feet and fingers. Hand gestures are still used today to
express wickedness.
e. \\#14\\ His heart is perverted, that is immoral or not
normal.
f. \\#14\\ His mind is thinking of mischief and how to
cause problems.
g. \\#15\\ Hence, his end…
(1) …shall come suddenly.
(2) …he shall be broken (violently crushed).
(3) …and there is no remedy (no way to stop it).
2. \\#6:16-19\\ Why the Forward Is Headed for Destruction
These verses explain the sure destination of the forward.
He is guilty of the seven deadly sins.
a. PRIDE - "A proud look" - Pride is thinking too much of
self.
b. LYING - "a lying tongue"
c. MURDERING - "shed innocent blood"
(1) The idea is to shed blood with no just cause.
(2) The killer need not pull the trigger or handle
the knife. He could be the cause behind the death
(i.e. drug dealer).
d. WICKED IMAGINATIONS - God not only hates the hands of
those who do evil but the minds of those who think
it up.
e. EAGER TO HARM - When one is made glad and excited by
doing wrong.
f. FALSE WITNESS - This is a liar who uses his lies to
pass or to place blame on another.
(1) The sin is still lying but there is more to it
than starting trouble with lies.
(2) This person is placing guilt of one person’s
wrong on another, perhaps in an official or legal
setting.
g. SOWETH DISCORD
(1) The seventh is more than a sin God hates.
(2) It is an abomination that God despises \\#6:16\\.
(3) It is to plant seeds of disharmony among any who
were in harmony.
D. \\#6:20-35\\ Stay Away from the Adulteress - This is the third
time the father has spoken to his son about sexual immorality
\\#2:16-19, 5:1-23\\.
1. \\#6:20-23\\ Listen to Me
a. \\#21\\ The picture of binding or tying the words of
the godly mother and father to oneself is again used.
\\#Pro 3:3\\
b. \\#22\\ If tied to you, these words will be with you
when you go, when you sleep, and when you are awake
(i.e. at all times).
c. It is interesting to notice that God’s Word can effect
us down to our subconscious level; that is, it can
even change our thoughts when we sleep.
d. \\#23\\ God Word (here called COMMANDMENTS, LAWS, and
REPROOFS) is called a LAMP and LIGHT to show us THE
WAY OF LIGHT. A variety of pictures to illustrate
how needful the Word is our getting to the right
destination.
2. \\#6:24-35\\ Stay Away from the Adulteress
a. \\#24-25\\ The tools of her trade
(1) \\#24\\ A flattering tongue - Men are ego driven
creatures who are often turned with flattery.
(2) \\#25\\ Beauty - Men are sight driven creatures
who can be turned by beauty.
(3) \\#25\\ Eyelids - Men are attention driven
creatures who can be turned by flirting. (The
"naughty person" of \\#Pro 6:12-19\\ does not
have to be male.)
b. \\#26\\ The consequences of your actions - A wealthy
man can be brought to poverty and a noble man can
become the adulteress’ trophy.
c. \\#27-35\\ Think about what you are doing!
\\#Pro 5:6\\ told the men not to think about the
adulteress for her plans and purposes cannot be
determined when in the heat of passion, but you can
reason what your actions are going to cost you.
(1) \\#27-28\\ Those who play with fire are going to
get burned.
(2) \\#29-31\\ No one will respect or excuse a man
who steals another man’s wife.
(a) The topic has narrowed from a man with any
strange woman to the man who carries on an
affair with the married woman.
(b) \\#30-31\\ If a man steals food because he
is hungry, he will be punished by the law
but others comprehend his motive. There is
no comprehension or compassion for those
who steal marriage partners.
(c) These verses imply that even when wrong is
committed out of personal necessity, the
wrong must still be dealt with.
(3) \\#32-35\\ The one who would steal another’s mate
is a fool.
(a) \\#32\\ He or she lacks understanding.
(b) \\#32\\ What they are doing will hurt them.
(c) \\#33\\ Their hurt will be both physical
(wound) and public (dishonor).
(d) \\#33\\ If public, it will never be
forgotten.
(e) \\#34-35\\ Because the offended mate will
never forgive the offending man.
(1) The Bible is speaking of the adulterer
trying to make amends with the
offended husband.
(2) The rage of the offended husband will
never be appeased, even by "ransom"
or "gifts."
(3) Why? Because you stole something that
cash and gifts can never replace.
NOTE - The final remarks of this chapter are speaking of the natural
man’s ability to forgive when offended. It does not take into account
the power of grace brought to us by Jesus Christ. Even with our
Lord’s grace, there will and should remain a divide between two men
who have experienced such a grief.
