Proverbs 9 is the last chapter in the 2nd section of Proverbs. It
divides into two sections, both of which we have discussed before.
I. \\#1:1-9\\ Introduction
II. \\#1:10-9:18\\ - A Father’s Exhortations
A. \\#Pro 1:10-21\\ Resist Peer Pressure
B. \\#Pro 1:20-33\\ Wisdom Desires You
C. \\#Pro 2:1-22\\ You need to seek wisdom.
D. \\#Pro 3:1-35\\ You need to keep living wisely.
E. \\#Pro 4:1-9:18\\ Various Exhortations
1. \\#9:1-12\\ A Salute (Ode) to Wisdom - The section again
personifies wisdom.
a. \\#1-3\\ Wisdom has prepared a feast.
b. \\#4-5\\ Wisdom has given the invitation.
c. \\#6\\ Wisdom has utter her command. Forsake the
foolishness.
d. \\#7-8\\ Do not waste time helping those who do not
want help.
e. \\#9\\ Helping those who want help is an investment
into their life.
f. \\#10-12\\ Understand the relationship between wisdom
and God.
(1) Wisdom is a "pure attribute of God," for like
love, wisdom is merely a virtue that God
possess, it is what God is.
1John 4:8 …God is love. \\#1John 4:16\\
(2) \\#10\\ To know and reverence God is required to
have wisdom. (You cannot have true wisdom
without God, but neither can you have God
without having some wisdom.)
(3) \\#11\\ Wisdom will add years to your life.
(a) Again, this is a general principal not a
specific promise.
(b) Some wise die young and some foolish live
to be old.
(4) \\#12\\ The idea of this verse is that if you act
wise, you will become wise; but if you reject
wisdom, you will become hurt yourself.
2. \\#9:13-18\\ A Warning Against the Strange Woman - We have
talked about the strange or immoral woman repeal
(probably because immoral people are the greatest threat
to our young people.) Even those the title "strange" or
immoral woman is not used in this text, the context will
tell you that is who we are talking about.
a. \\#9:13\\ The Immoral Woman’s Character - She called
"foolish" and "simple." The text then defines them by
saying she "knows nothing." These are terms to
indicate she is has no eternal wisdom.
b. \\#9:14-16\\ The Immoral Woman’s Actions
(1) She is idle.
(2) She is a predator.
(3) She prays on those who are likewise foolish.
c. \\#9:17\\ The thrill - "Stolen waters" and "secret
bread" - Both are things done which excites and gets
the adrenaline flowing.
d. \\#9:18\\ The Price - Death (literal and symbolic)
III. \\#10:1-22:16\\ - Short proverbs - While this section is the Word
of God, true, and worth every minute which is devoted to it in
reading and study, it is too varied for an outline. Most of
the proverbs seem be about different topics, and the ones which
are on related topics are not together. For that reason, I
will omit these verses and move on to the next section.
